I feel outcasted by my race a bit when talking about cutting/Self harm. Usually, African Americans aren't portrayed as the usual stereotyped "cutter". In the media and in real life.
Once me and my friends were talking about emo people and someone brought up the fact that black people don't cut. "You won't see a *n-word* cuttin'. Naw that shit for white people."
no offense but before coming on that site,I believed that. I was the only girl of color I knew self harmed. Now I see the wide diversity of people that self harm as well and it means the world to me. It made me feel less alone.
So is anyone else apart of a 'stereotype' not usually associated with self harm? Who did it make you feel and why do you think people like you aren't usually the "cutters"?

I myself am white so not really a race steryotype but when people see me they dont see cutter or belemic or anything like that. they see the guy that enjoys his life. so not a racial way but in my style yes

People don't think I do, just because I act so happy all the time. They are really shocked if they find out. Just because your a certain race doesn't mean your any less affected by it than people of other races. Its just something peoole don't really talk about, so your not alone in this, don't ever believe you are.
I'm here to talk if you want too <3

Interesting. I was talking to a girl on Omegle the other night and her and I really got to talking and she mentioned that she cuts. She was actually a mix- A White father and an African American mother. I, myself, haven't really heard of anyone besides mostly Whites. I don't believe that cutting is restricted to just one race, sex, social status, country, standard of living, etc.

Nah, I'm the stereotypical middle-class white girl, but I dress like a prep and I'm extremely intelligent. My mom thought that "people of your [my] intelligence don't do something as stupid as cutting." That's what most people think, to be honest. No one irl knew that I cut for a long time until somehow someone found out and told a lot of people. Now I'm more open about talking with people who are going through it/are just simply curious (I want to try to break some of the stigmas about self-harm), so it doesn't really matter. Okay, I'm rambling haha.
