Get good grades.
And don't waste your money on a new PS3. Reflow the GPU and CPU using a pen torch and a video on youtube.
Ask your father to do this for you (Do NOT do this yourself)

Yes, it's a rather easy fix. I would just take it to someone you know who's good at soldering circuits.

This.
But from the looks of your post, Dusty, it seems that you are biased towards a PS3(personally, I would too, but this isn't about me), so if it comes to having to buy a new one, the PS3 seems like your best choice.
Or if you still have a warranty, check to see if you can use that.

Problem with Microsoft here is the Xbox really is just a money grab. You'll buy the 360 and all it's accessories, then, when it breaks, you'll be given shitty consumer service and be told to buy a new one as it is unrepairable.
You're beat beat here is first to try and repair it, THEN buy a new one on sale if you couldnt

In order in my opinion.
1. If you have a warrenty try that option
2. Call up PSN customer service and see if they will repair it (free or not to expensive idk)
3. If they cant for a reasonable cost or at all try fixing yourself. DONT FIX BEFORE YOU TRY #2
4. Buy a new ps3 (dont bother with a slim version theres nothing special infact they suck more) and dont get a 360 because there just generaly worse in customer service

You can give fixing it a shot, but that in my experience has only been a temporary solution, whenever mine got YOD I had insurance on it so the guys replaced the solder 3 times before they would replace it and each time it lasted exactly two weeks to that day.
If they're half price at your GameStop then I would recommend getting a new one, bearing in mind Sony has also revealed a further price drop of around $50 recently at Gamescon. You already seem like a ps3 fan, so changing now this late in the game would seem pointless, especially since exclusives will be more beneficial for a PS3 gamer this Christmas.
I've also seen people bad mouthing the Slim, if you were getting a new PS3 they would be your best bet since they are the most updated hardware and would be least likely to have technical problems like this in future, plus much more memory out of the box.

cause it cost 150$ to fix and a new one at game stop is 199$

Ergo, it's cheaper to fix than to buy a new one.

Or add $50 for a brand new system rather than a temporary fix.

Widustman, Read my own post. For 4 dollars you can fix it yourself.
Butane micro torch, solder, butane and solder flux. Have your father do it for you.

So you've already made up your mind, what was the point of asking our opinions? :P
