Hi I don't swim alot so I am asking the swimmers a question. How long do you have to stay in the pool and swim until you get the lean abs body? Any answers and suggestions appreciated!

If you are going for mass, you need to do the regular work out stuff. As for the tone, add in swimming with dryland exercises in less than equal proportions to achieve tone. I wouldn't suggest it for losing weight, however.

No but it will certainly toughen you up, get some of that fat off. Swimming is a lot harder than you might expect. Now you wont get buff from it, that's been said, but you probably wont get buff off of track either. Lifting weights is often best for building muscle mass.

Swimming alone will only tone your body, visible muscles require a trip to the gym weight room.

Swimming is more of a toning sport because of the training and drills you do. If you have mass and want it to look better though, try swimming for a bit.

Swimming is harder than a lot of people think. To actually make a decent work out you have to push, you don't have much oxygen and it's a totally different resistance. A gym will always be the best place for tone.

As a swimmer myself who swims five days a week on an EXTREMELY hard swim team, let me tell you that the best way to work your abs is to do butterfly (if you're up to it or know how) or do butterfly kick on your back. Swimming is, well, a lot of fun but hard to do. It requires endurance because you can't stop in the middle of a lane or set and if you want to push yourself hard it requires correct breathing technique and willingness to go as fast as you can.

As everyone said, swimming will probably give you a lean, toned body. However, most swimmers that you see with the buff looking build also cross train. In fact, most of us cross train. If you're just starting off, I'd say do an hour of swimming and maybe a half hour of dry land every other day, and on the off days, I'd swim for an hour and a half. Personally, I swim more than that and do dry land and other sports as well as cross training. But I've also been swimming competitively for about ten years. As Stephen said, butterfly is a good stroke to work your abs, but breaststroke, when properly executed (which it frequently is not) is also amazing for your abs.
