View Full Version : Parents misinformed about college

I'm a very hard working student. There are nights when I don't sleep, days when I don't eat, weeks when I only leave the house to hit the library, Staples, Starbucks, and school. My parents seem to think I'm living the life of a madman-hermit but what they don't seem to understand is, I have to.

Due to numerous factors I don't need to bore you with, I have no money for college. Zip, nadda, zero- NOTHING and loans are barley an option seeing as my parents credit isn't even at rock bottom, it's far below it. Sure, I'll find some way to get Uncle Sam to help me out, but I'm otherwise on my own.

Now, my parents are under the illusion (because my mother received a degree about 15 years ago and my father never attended college) that college is a reasonably cheap thing and that schools will be fighting to the death, throwing money from their ivy towers to have me and, as I hope all of you know, they're wrong.

I've packed my schedule to the brim with all IB's, even tossing away my lunch period for a law class in my senior year. I run cross country, intern, participate in clubs, etc, etc, etc. I work my fingers to the nub each and every day.... but my parents think it's all for naught. "Luke, you're going to a good college no matter what!"

My mother even offered to search for scholarships and grants over the summer to help take a load off the heavy burden I'll be facing but it's now August 18th and all she's found is a scholarship for the best prom duct tape suit. Yes, really. I was so frustrated with the results that I went out and got her College Money for Dummies and as of today she's begun to read it.

Have any of you been through similar problems with your parents? Can any of you offer tips, advice, support, etc? This is becoming increasingly frustrating because, despite my working so hard, they feel as though it's silly and come May, I don't want to be crying with them holding my shoulders when college acceptances/denies come rolling in saying, "Oh. We had no idea".

Well you are doing good in terms of your education as you are doing all you can +more.

Also as I am not to fimilar with the education system in the USA. I think the best you can do is just constantly go on at your parents as in the USA everything costs money in terms of education but here in the UK most courses are free or cost very little or are free at the time (university is obvoiusly bit diffrent). So all I can suggest is you either talk to someone at your place of education about this problem or you talk to your parents and constantly talk to them about it...remind them

Anyway best of luck
