View Full Version : Sao Paulo "Death Squads"

I heard about these earlier today, and I literally threw up.
In Sao Paulo, 20% of the entire children's population live on the streets as urchins, scrounging for the only life they can possibly lead. They've become such an annoyance to shopkeepers and residents that there is a price on every bothersome kid's head for their slaughter. Basically, human pest control.
These "Death Squads" roam the streets at night with handguns and automatic rifles, looking out for anyone who even remotely looks lie a street urchin, and kills them. These people end kids' lives all for $50 USD.
In Sao Paulo, a child's life is worth less than a new copy of Call of Duty.
My question is this: How can such depravity be possible? We're here in the Western world, completely oblivious to the world around us. The fact that man can be so inhuman to his brothers is horrific beyond belief. These "Death Squads", while trying to fight for survival on their own, do not operate on any sort of moral grounds whatsoever.
What do you think?

Yeah, it's just the way the world is. It's a massive shame, but when you have poverty people start so see them as vermin, it's the way the world is nowadays. I find it horrendous, but in all honesty, looking at the world... it didn't surprise me. I got quite emotional too.
Sorry if this is innapropriate...but did you find out from Cracked like I did?

Things like this happen all around the globe. For example, in Pakistan, apostasy or rumoured apostasy will probably lead to strictly religious police or angry mobs that end up murdering the apostate, but that depends on where you are in the country. I think it applies to most places.

I don't find a whole lot wrong with it logically. Human population is very high already and every new life means there's less food for everyone else. People are also very poor. Human life is costly, and every day we live, we cntribute to the death of another fellow human. In reality, it could be "urchins" or slum kids with guns killing for money. 50 USD is A LOT of money. In my native country, 50 dollars can be an adequate monthly salary for low end laborers. I feel that this problem is an ultimate result of capitalism. It's inevitable. Humans expand population exponentially. With the constant class struggle, it's impossible for everyone to be well fed, well paid and succeed economically. Thus, we have a vicious cycle.
Emotionally, this appalls me. Brazil needs to fix their housing situation. The USSR had a very good housing model and so did East Germany. Perhaps Brazil could adopt such things as that. If they really want to stick to capitalism, it would be a good idea to attract foreign and national business near the cities to employ these people, even the children. Pay them humane wages, provide housing and healthcare.
