I attempted the Butterfly Project about a week ago. I drew one butterfly on my wrist and named it Michael so I wouldn't cut and kill it. Well I cut and ruined the entire thing. But night before last I drew three more. One on each of my thighs and one on my wrist. One represents my niece Aralynn, another my mom, and the one on my wrist Michael. Those are the three people that mean the most to me, and I hate cutting and disappointing them. Even though my niece doesn't understand what cutting is.. I still want to get better for her. So fair I haven't cut and haven't washed them off. So two days and still going strong. I hope this works.

I've always loved this project, it's cute. Not only does the meaning behind the butterflies help, but it just is an optimistic look on things. Everyone likes butterflies. :)

I hope it'll continue helping you. You're strong enough, you have it in you.

It is a project. I didn't think it would work when I first tried it out, but it did for a few days. It's amazing how such little things can help with addictions. And thanks, I'll definitely try to keep up the good work! (:

i've done this many times, and it works, but for me, i have to be really committed to not killing the butterflies.

Yeah, you have to be really committed to anything for it to work. But I'm glad it helped you. (:

don't stop cutting for anyone but yourself. if you do, you're doing it for all the wrong reasons and relapse is much more likely to happen.

I'm not just doing it for myself.. But these people mean the most to me, so if I involve them, it helps me more.

I'm so happy you found something that works for you, and I hope you remain strong.

Thanks darling. (:

When I did this, I named my girl butterfly Hannah because that's what I want to name my future daughter, lol.
Hope everything works out for you.

That seems like a really good idea and I hope it works for you! :)

I have been thinking of trying it for a while, but I don't have anyone that means enough to me to name the butterfly after...so I don't think it would work for me

Name it after an animal you have/had and loved more than anything. Name it after a flower. Just find something that works for you. (:

Proud to say I haven't killed my new Hannah butterfly, lol.
I felt bad after seeing this thread and your name...she must live a long, healthy, fake life....

I really hope you succeed at this. (: And not just because your butterfly has my name, haha.

Yeah, they do fade fast. But try using a Sharpie Marker and make it dark. It'll stay on for at least a day or two longer. It'll be hard to make the butterfly live at first, but it'll get easier.

She's been doing it in sharpie. I don't think she's making it dark though.

It's pointless for me to draw my own butterfy because I won't care if I kill it.

Have her do it dark next time. It'll stay on longer which means... You'll be cut free longer. (:

Yeah, you have to be committed to not letting it die or the entire thing is pointless.

I have tried this method, naming the butterfly after someone i love, but after a day or two i relise how much happier that person is and just fall again. i realy hope it works for you though, and you keep it alive longer than i did :)

My old counselor did something similar, of course it was off the book and wasn't logged because self destructive behavior is supposed to be reported and acted on. But she saw potential in me like she did with everyone else. What she did was she asked me what types of things made me happy, made me feel good. I told her gummy bears and rainbows. We talked about it and I told her why those make me happy and she's an artist which was interesting, so she drew gummy bears and rainbows all over my arms. Told me to go three days with them there. She told me they were my friends and whenever i got upset to just look at them and remember the small things in life that make it worth my time. 3 days I went without touching a blade, after that she started drawing one gummy bear on each wrist with a rainbow under it, she gave me a sharpie and told me to write the gummy bears names inside the rainbow and I did. She told me they were going to be my best friends for the next few days. So I did what she said and I haven't cut in a few years now, because every time I get the urge I think of gum gum and juan (I had a hard time with names that day). I really suggest this method, by this method I mean any form of The Butterfly Project. If you really commit, really believe these symbols mean something to you, it'll work. But you do have to be strong. Another small trick is eating chocolate when you want to cut. It releases some of the same chemicals as cutting does. (Just a small trick I was taught).

That's really cute. I never even thought to do something like that. It makes me smile that you're one of the few success stories. I hope this works for you forever... And I'm going to try it myself. So thanks for sharing your story. (:
