I'm in need of a new operating system. I have Win7 Ultimate (torrented) and I used an activation crack, but now it's telling me I have 12 days to activate. I was going to torrent Win7 home premium but I can't find a good torrent. So I was thinking of installing Ubuntu because it's free, and all you have to do is download and run an exe. Seems simple. But I'm worried that alot of things wont be compatible with Linux.
So, I need opinions. Is Ubuntu good?

Ubuntu is easily the most user-friendly of the Linux distros.
If you don't do a lot of gaming on your computer, you really won't have to worry about compatibility issues, as that's the major thing that's incompatible with Linux. If you absolutely need to run a Windows program, there's always WINE which usually works. :p

I'm not a major gamer, especially with this laptop. The only game I have installed on my laptop is Maplestory. I do play some browser games though (Runescape for example)

Browser games should be fine.
There's Linux versions of both Java & Flash for you to use so your browser games won't be affected.

Dammit, you beat me! :P

Not in my opinion...but that's just me.
For Linux beginners(don't worry young one, you'll get there eventually ;)), I recommend ArkLinux (http://arklinux.org/).

Indeed. Make sure to check this list (http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&sTitle=Browse%20Applications&sOrderBy=appName&bAscending=true) of supported programs before you spend time installing a program.

Maplestory might work, depending on your Wine version and game version.

Good luck :)
EDIT: And of course, inb4 AutoPlay :P

Thanks for all the help! I'm only going to Linux as a last resort, I'm still looking for a Win7 torrent that doesn't require burning it to a CD. If I fail to find one I'll resort to Linux.
Edit: Once I'm able to hand out more rep, I shall. :P

I ended up getting Win7 Home Premium, but if this goes wrong I'll go with Linux.

For a second, i thought you said ArchLinux, I was about to think you we're crazy! :P But Yeah, if you go Linux, I say either ArkLinux or Linux Mint (Gnome edition or KDE)

Ubuntu 11.04 is really dope. You'll love it... i do! However, you can also try the latest Fedora which ships with Gnome 3. really kickass as well.
Grab a copy of Oracle Virtualbox and install both on your windows machine. See, which one fits your needs best and wipe out every Microsoft product from your hard drive!
# EDIT:
Oh and, here's a really slick tutorial on how to build yourself a perfect desktop.
