Maybe he wants mankind to surrender their individuality? Who knows?

I assume you speak of collective consciousness (oh how I love Wikipedia). As humans, we're already in such a state. Our mirror neurons pretty much connect us as a network of electrical circuits that are constantly interacting with one another. I think that we should keep our individuality in our mental and emotional sense, but we should form this collective consciousness when facing economical, social and political issues. We must take all mankind into account. This is the fundamental flaw with Capitalism in my opinion. We do not calculate the changes that might trigger formation of new "realities" (an individual's own perspective). However, I do not believe we should melt together our consciousness for no particular reason. I think that we need to have unity, but not authoritarian unity. It shouldn't affect our personal lives if our decisions only affect us.

My understanding of this is that it means every thinks and acts the same way, and are united by that. I've been to small societies like that (like a little village called New Square that I doubt any of you know), and I can tell you it has some benefits, but is mostly detrimental.

Advantages: There really is a great sense of unity. Every helps each other out. There is practically no crime, and there isn't any of that fear of strangers that exists in the rest of the world. As long as you live in the community and think like they do, you'll be welcome, even if you're never met or talked or know anything about the other person.

Disadvantages: Everyone is exactly alike. Besides for the utter creepiness of that, there's also no place for someone who thinks 'outside the box' there. New ideas are not welcome. If you disagree with the rules set up, you're also no longer welcome. Individuality is non-existent. This kind of mentality sets back progress, and art.

When I did a little research on this topic before posting I often found that associated with 'hive mind' and 'collective consciousness' was 'herd mentality,' which I'm opposed too (most of the time). I put a lot of value on individuality. I think it's the key to progress.

Also having a collective consciousness in a society can be really bad if that society is being united by doing something terrible. The Nazis come to mind.

Please ignore me if this is not what you were referring to.

I don't think it's humanly possible. It's a utopian idea and it's not good. Hell, it would be dystopian in my eyes for everyone to see the same way and think the same way. Some 1984 shit right there.

However, I do think that we should attempt to connect our perspectives instead of forming an isolated individual opinion. We should make an attempt to find something in common between philosophical realities.

No way. Part of what makes humanity what it is, is that each individual person is their own person. It's sometihng that was said in Ender's Game: The buggers didn't realize that to humanity, each life was important, as each was an individual existence, while in a hive, only the queen matters. People would be way too expendable.

No. To have a hive mind would be to surrender all that is human about us.

Ever read The Giver? That book was kinda messed up. A hive like thinking can lead the lost of personalities that don't help the progression of the group. What if someone was born with a metal or physical disability? A hive mind's first option would be to eradicate them simply because they aren't as helpful as a normal child. This type of world would be scary, not matter how good it looks on paper. A mixture of independent and group mentality would be the best society. A place where people work as a group well not because the think the same but because the have different ideas and opinions.
