Ok people what is your opinion on the effectiveness of the United Nations?

Heres my personal opinion

The United Nations is all bark and no bite, and people know it so thats why people don't really listen to the UN or their tons of "sanctions" which will supposedly do something.

Recently 3.7million people are going to starve in east africa because aid was stolen by militants and the UN just says "we do not condone this"

If for whatever reason I was the PM of Canada (hypotheticly speaking) I would put forward a motion to pull out of the UN

There have been so many instances when even the small Canadian Forces could clean up a situation

1996 - Rwandan genocide the UN troops just stood there watching 800k people get slaughtered and raped. I think if Canada for the sake of argument just walked in and shot those mofos and basically stopped the violence I think it would've really improved our image on the world stage. Instead of people calling the US to solve problems its be Canada.

I don't beleive the UN can keep the peace if there is no peace to keep. Sometimes you need to make peace and shoot some bastards before there can be peace. They would've gotten hung for war crimes if caught anyways.

For me I would want the UN to be disbanded

I also find it useless. Before that we had a League of Nations. Result? WW2.

What bothers me about the U.N. is they have the Peacekeepers, but peacekeepers can't do shit and civilians still die when peacekeepers are present.

And If there wasn't a UN the world would be so unorganized. You don't know how many threats they've stopped.

Well the UN does state that they will not fire unless they are being attacked.

And as for the stolen aid well what can they do...they have launched investigations

Also I think they do an Okay job...They have prevented a few mini wars.

I like the fact that they still keep the monarchy, at least as a symbol

Or Spain. Or Sweden. Or Norway. Or Denmark. Or Luxembourg. There are others. But the UK is the most well known, I believe.

Just like all the countries in the world, The UN isn't perfect. But its a nice organization to have going on it's working fine. You all just complain about the small bad things they do but do realize the huge good things they do.

I say remove the UN, it's useless. Go back to NATO.

You do realize they have nothing to do with each other, right?

The UN actually has good intentions. They are basically handcuffed by themselves. I think it is good that all the nations in the world can send a representative and actually sit and have dialogue. Like everything, they do have many bad points, but they also have good points as well. It just seems lately that they have become pretty irrelevant and not making a difference in all the worlds "hot spots" . It is a good idea to keep them around actually, in my opinion.

This. Even if they cannot stop wars, even if they can do little to reduce world problems, the UN are still a very important organization, because it is the only one where nearly every nation meet and talk to each other.

Despite all its mistakes and weaknesses, it is still one of the biggest achievements of humanity so far - for the first time in history, there's the idea of a global, non-exclusive diplomacy. It needs to be improved, not removed; just because it wasn't always successful doesn't mean it is hopelessly broken and cannot be made any better.

I don't think the UN is effective at all. It seems pretty corrupt and just acts as a cover for powerful countries to dominate other ones. Also the Security Council is controlled by the big western countries, so it isn't very democratic.
