Wow, I didn't think it was even realistically possible to kill that many people on your own all at once. This is the stuff of B-movies.

This is unreal that anyone could do something like this, and believe that what they did was the right thing to do.A friend of mine was one of the 84 people that died on Utøya :(,he did not shoot all of them,at least 30 of them drowned trying to swim to the mainland. What i find a little bit irritating is that the man that did it gets maximum 21 years because that's the highest time u get sentenced to.But lets not focus on that, focus on the families that are affected by this tragedy, not the man that did it,it is what he wants.

Death total up to 90 now according to CNN. Most likely to increase due to bodies of children in water.

My Gosh I am seriously disgusted . How could this happen ? So many innocent lives lost . It's not fair . I cannot believe this and the fact that everyday more people are killed . Sometimes living in this world is more of a nightmare than a privilege . This is extremely depressing .. I can't even fathom why someone would kill children at a summer camp like that . I'm really scared now . Afraid to even leave my house .

I have some friends that actually LIVE in Oslo who heard and saw the building during the explosion! They said it was horribly frightening and they never want to see something like that again. Nobody really knew what to do... I also heard that not 80, but 91+ people died by now. :/

I saw it this morning and I am soo upset about this...why target the kids at a camp, they were innocent victims in all of this..I understand the bomb was at the Prime Minister's office or something and that makes sense as a political target, but those kids did not deserve any of this...I'm praying for the victims, survivors and all the families involved.

the kids were members of the same political party as the prime minister, but that is no reason for shooting innocent kids that only want to fight for what they believe in.

Saw this on bbcnews this morning, other than the fundamentalist Christian websites, another motivation for his actions was multi-cultural integration, especially the influx of Muslim immigrants in Norway. I thought England was dealing with multiculturalism deplorably but this guy has modulated it into a Duke Nukem arena.

Good question,it will probably be answered tomorrow when he will explain his action, only thing that is said by police from the interrogations yesterday is that he thinks what he did was horrible, but absolutely necessary. He also compares him self to a Templar, and describes himself as a laid-back and tolerant guy.Yeah right.

It's probably because Norway is oh-so-Liberal and secular. It isn't surprising that a Fundamentalist had done it. As with what Deadpie had said:

I do get that he would dislike a certain political party, but what I don't get is that he would go around killing people just because of his hatred for that party. Just try to send a complaint to about/to that party or get other people that dislike it to protest against it, but don't kill innocent people.

To me , it doesnt matter why he killed those people , or why killed in Norway . It's absolutely heartbreaking and hard to even fathom a man killing so many innocent children . My prayers and condolences to the Norwegians . 21 years is not enough time for a horrible crime like this . Very , very upsetting . I will be praying for these people affected by this horrific event . Rest in peace .

Correction of what i said earlier,he can get more, the max is 21 years but every 5th year they can make his sentence longer,so he can technically be sentenced to life in prison.

21 years or the equivalent of 82 days per crime is a ridiculous sentence for a mass murderer, especially if you consider the sentence in the UK is near as much for one murder. The crimes were the work of a well educated person who had right wing and extremist views towards Islam. The people he shot were selected and Norway, Europe and all other western democracies that encourage mulitculturalism are clearly at threat.
This guy needs to be dealt with in a humane way to send the message out that people in democratic socities are in the right and that violence, no matter how evil the person is will not be tolerated. It will then hopefully in the process combat international terroism and the threat of an increase in these extreme right wing political groups, clearly driven by delusional ideologies.

Altho I'm late to finding this thread, I feel with you. I also lost a good friend :(
And you're wrong. 21 years is the max prison sentence, but the Norwegian laws also have "forvaring" (I don't know the exact English word), which basically means that after 21 years in prison, the court can grant him release or another 21 years... and that can go on forever. So, yes, it IS a life sentence. If he gets released, then I will be outside with a shotgun to kidnap him and torture him for the rest of his life, just like I assume the entire Norwegian people will do to him as well. Gruesome act that he deserves to be punished for -.- :(

Goes to show how tragic gun control laws can be when law abiding people can't protect themselves. Guarenteed if someone on that island had a gun he wouldn't have taken out as many people. Those strict laws didn't protect those 80-90 something people.

I was reading an opinion article in the comment section of The Times. Norway are very lenient with criminals in terms of sentencing and the way they are treated in prison. Crime rates are amongst the lowest in the world and re-offending rates are also very low. There seems to be no anger shown by the Norwegians, no calls for death sentences, just a sense of overwhelming grief.
The way the Norwegians have acted should be applauded because you don't get reactions like that towards mass murderers in this country, the is he mental or insane (when actually this man isn't insane, he knew exactly what he was doing and it was just a cold, calculated murder from a clever but evil man rather like with Hilter) comments come out or he should be sentenced to death. We could learn a lot from Norway.

Agreed. Norway has no concealed carry laws, so he knew he was safe. A concealed carry law could have prevented this whole thing just by scaring him out of it.

On the topic of guns,im personaly against laws like that, but i think that he police should get better guns than they already have.that alone could have scared him from it,but i doubt it,he would probably have done it no matter what.

I cannot begin to comprehend such a sickening crime. The man deserves to rot in prison; he won't be missed by the world. As for 'why in Norway?' the man was Norwegian and unhappy with where his country was going, for example he was against immigration, and any ethnic group except white people. He also disliked Muslims and Jews.
