View Full Version : Disabling smilies in the shoutbox

The point of the shoutbox is to shout not post a bunch of smilies like drums and things like :woot: and :bounce:. And some people post nothing but smilies. I think it should be text only because it's really annoying to see it a smiliey gallery. It got a lot better after we made the rule of no excessive smilies but some new members aren't having the best shoutbox courtesy and it would clean up the shoutbox and be used what its intended for.

There should be a shout box, where nothing but text is placed, and a smiley box, where nothing but smilies are placed. GO SMILEY BOX! :P

No, I like smiley's it's people who use for no reason who are the problem.

I think we should just get back into peoples mind the smiley rule, and enforce it.

Oh, and people saying..go to chat!!!

If people wanted to be in chat, they'd already be there.

I have to agree. I'd love it if we could limit smilie use to shouts with actual words (and then have some limit like 1 smilie for every 12 words) but I don't think that's possible with the new FlatFile system that is being used. I think I could disable the smilies altogether in the Shoutbox, but I'll have to wait on what more people think.

... I always say go to chat.:-x :eatarrow: There should be a smiley thread, if there isn't already. :P

That actually gets people to the chat room by doing that. I've seen Alex and others say it in the shoutbox then people start coming.

ye and maybe if people know there friends are in chat.. theyd go...

Underground_Network

Yeah people should be allowed to state that they're in chat, so other people go there, and aren't lonely ( :P ). But I also, although I used to put lots of smilies in the shoutbox, think that infractions should be doled out to people who overuse/misuse stickies.

Underground_Network I've seen you do this too many other times on other friends. You've been on this site for 20 days. Give it a little more time and explore the site to see how it works here before going off making these wild suggestions and say how the site should run. I'm not saying your opinion doesn't matter but give it a little time. Infractions for stickies is the most ridiculous idea. If it's a diary owner,it's their diary. If its from a moderator, the staff will deal with it.

Don't take what I'm saying as an attack I'm only trying to give you a little tip.

I think we should just have smileys like ':D' ':)' and that sorta thing.

(Responding to Anthony) No just infractions for in the shoutbox, lmao, not the whole site...

We already have a system that works.

I agree. For the shout box we don't really need much more than the basic smilies

Underground_Network

Oh just the shoutbox... yeah for the shoutbox, just basic smilies should be fine.

I think it could only do good if we disabled smilies. They do get a bit annoying when they are overused, and it does seem that our rule that tries to stop it doesn't seem to be working.

And what is wrong with saying go to the chatroom? I do it all the time. It's the shoutbox, it's what it's there for.

Smilies show emotion. So I say NO, let's not disable Shoutbox smilies. Especially the buttsex one. That shows the most emotion. lol

imgs take up so much room in the shoutbox i like smilies i just hate when they are used for no real reason when you could just as easily use text and change the texts color like red could be angry grey could be bored stuff like that

Underground_Network
February 23rd, 2007, 08:55 PM
You can change the text colors in the shout box, if thats what you're talking about, but as i said earlier, for in the shoutbox, overusage, and misusage of the smilies should result in a warning, or possibly an infraction... Thats just my opinion though. :P

if i remember correctly, i'm the only one who puts images, mainly very small .gifs just for laughs

Underground_Network
February 23rd, 2007, 08:59 PM
Thats fine in my opinion, as long as their small, and don't cause anyones comp to lag.

Which is not text only, which I'm suggesting. Allowing image codes could easily allow someone to do this:
http://www.virtualteen.org/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif and get this :)

The point of the shoutbox is to post messages not have laughs at small gifs for no reason.

February 24th, 2007, 08:12 AM
Shoutbox you mean... Its at the bottom of the page on the forums index.. You can say stuff like, Hello, Lets go to chat, or you can sort of spam... just don't over do it...

Underground_Network
February 24th, 2007, 04:05 PM
Yeah the giant turkey, and those things we shoud get rid of, and maybe only have holiday smilies on certain holidays (for shoutbox only).

at the very least you should disable images in the shout box. As for smiles since there is no way to limit the amount of smiles per shout. I think you may just have to disable it all together, or you could try limiting the smilies you could use.

Or there is the third option that people could just be mature about this and not spam the shout box with smilies.

Unfortunately, that has yet to work...

Though I'm going to take a look at some source coding and see if I can implement a limit to images in the Shoutbox shouts.

How is that coming along Kiros? The smiliey overuse is still an issue.

I'm sorry... the XML for the yellow-black skin has tied up most of my free time (all 5 minutes :()... so I still haven't even gotten around to this... for now, please just ask other members to use less smilies. If you find that someone has gotten out of control, you may report them for excessive spam via PM with their username and a description of what was posted.

well idk about totally disabling smiley, us mods are now giving infractions for excessive smiles.

I don't think we should disable it all together...I think we should set a limit to the smiles and/or remove the long, annoying smileys such as :woot: from the shoutbox smiley gallery (if that is all possible or if there is such a thing as a shoutbox smiley gallery :P)

Maverick
March 24th, 2007, 04:49 PM
Mmmm I think it will be ok now since the newer members realize there's a consequence.
