View Full Version : Can't pee at school

I can't pee at the urinal when other guys are there. It just won't come out no matter if I am bursting. I just freeze up.
I end up holding a full bladder all day, from 7:30 a.m. to when I get home about 4 p.m. Anyone else have this problem?

This is known as Paruresis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paruresis).
I've had it for a few years now, although it's to a much lesser degree now.
To quote the first paragraph of Wiki:
Many people have brief, isolated episodes of urinary difficulty in situations where other people are in close proximity. Paruresis, however, goes well beyond simple shyness, embarrassment, fear of exposure, or fear of being judged for not being able to urinate. Other people may find that they are unable to urinate while in moving vehicles, or are fixated on the sounds of their urination in quiet restrooms or residential settings. In severe cases, a person with paruresis can urinate only when alone at home or through the process of catheterization
I bolded the part in that quote because it's directly what you said in your post.
People often suffer from this when they feel very self conscious or/and shy about themselves. One of the main reasons I've suffered from it is because of being gay and not wanting other boys to judge me or my penis size when I pee. That's not something I would be thinking in my head at the time "Oh god I hope he's not judging my penis size", it's a sub-conscious thing. Also, if I was standing against a urinal next to a boy who I thought was cute or attractive, there wouldn't be a hope in hell of me peeing. I think it's just the excitement...
Although oddly, even if it wasn't a boy I was remotely interested in, I'd still freeze up. I can't really explain it too much more, but it stems from being self-conscious and feeling a sense of vulnerability usually. Or in some cases, if you're gay or bi, you might be a little excited by who's peeing next to you.
Is there a possibility you could urinate in a cubicle instead? That's what I've always done to get away from peeing in urinals. Holding your bladder for that long 5 days a week really isn't healthy, and in the long run is very detrimental to your bladder. You're making it gradually weaker by holding your urine in.

I was going to quote what Lights said but then he already had so.. yeah. But yes, I also suffer from that, but not to any severe extent. I can go sometimes if there's only one or two people in but any more than that and I just can't. If you need to go then go in a cubicle.

What I think you should do is try to ignore the anxiety or fear by thinking of something else. I've never had this problem so I'm not sure how it would work.

I think its basically "bladder shy".
I used to have that problem when i was in preschool.
what i did was drink lots of water, and force myself to use the bathroom real often.
sometimes the urge to pee is too great to care about the surroundings, and after a while everything became normal for me i suppose.

I think that your best option is to just use a cubicle/stall. Cause holding your bladder everyday isn't too healthy. I would know because I have a friend who is just like you.

I understand what you're going thru , though to a much lesser degree...I'm a stall guy...always have been since I started school... still don't like the urinals in any public setting... but I could NEVER hold it that long.. small bladder here and I'm in there a lot. Glad the last year is starting soon...

I have it too sometimes, it's worse when somebody tries talking to you though. Usually running a tap helps to create a distraction or focus on something else. You'll get through it soon enough.

Thanks to all of you. You have shown me that I am not the only one. As to holding all day, it is worse in the afternoon as I said. But like my father I have a pretty large bladder. it holds about 3/4th of a quart or liter). Yes I try the stalls all the time when I try to go in the boy's room. I can't pee there either. In my school we aren't allowed to leave the room where we are learning unless there is a major problem. Also we only have 5 minutes to go to the next room--hardly any time to piss, especially when you have paruresis.
There is a forum where many men and women tell their stories.
www.paruresis.org. Yes, women have it too. They go into the stalls. Others are in the next stall. The woman freezes up. Others are waiting for her stall. She just can't go
P.S. If any of you want to "talk" to me.

yeah me too sometimes. i remember last year i was at the carolina panthers game and at halftime ir really had to use the bathroom. when it got to my turn i began to think about how many men were in the bathroom at that moment. (It was probably over 100)

If you can't overcome this, here's a few tips.
-Go right before you leave for school
-If you have to go during school go during class time, much less chance of another person being there
-If there is someone there, try going in one of the cubicles.
Hope this helped :P

Happens to me sometimes too. It's a mental thing to do with self consciousness, you just need to mentally train yourself not too.

I'm no shy of urinating with other guys around nor girls ether but I try not use the tilts at school coz it's just fucking discusting how they treat it I don't think the year 10s do it Its most likey the yr 7's if I really need to go at school I do it in when class or when the periods start coz there's no students around to piss on walls and so on.
