Hey
I'm a type 1 diabetic, and I have been since the age of 4. Recently I have read up on the health benefits of Fasting, and was wondering if you guys could give me some advice.
My diabetes is not very well controlled, I have what they would call 'brittle' or 'labile' diabetes, however in the past when I have gone through fast-like periods (Reducing my carbs to literally nothing, juice and zero or near-zero calorie fasting etc.), I have medical evidence that my diabetes has improved, quite greatly during the time I have been doing these things. o.0
So I was wondering, how long would you recommend I fast? And what type of fasting should I do?
Many thanks! :)

If it's not contolled, you shouldn't fast... I'd think. Because not eating fucks with your bloodsugar too.
I"m far from an expect. Can't you easily get a talk with a doctor about that in the UK>
fasting in general, be really careful. going more than a few days without food, and going more than A day without water (never restrict water consumption. ever) can mess with your immune system and every other bodily function.

I've been a type 1 diabetic since I was 5, so mines pretty well controlled now other than a few slip ups. You should never fast as a diabetic, especially when its not even controlled, you'll end up having a serious reaction (a hyperglycemia attack) which could lead to a coma. I wouldn't say we're the best people to talk about this with because we don't know anything about your specific needs (Weight, height, eating habits, insulin dosages etc) so its better to check with your doctor. But I really can't see them going along with it. If you need to talk feel free to PM me at any time.

Because most of my sugar levels are hyperglycemic, rather than hypoglycemic I think it could work, I know most diabetics can fast just fine. I take Novorapid and Levemir, so I would only have to take my Levemir and just adjust my novorapid.(Because I take my insulin according to what I eat, not eat according to what insulin I take.) If I went on a juice fast I could treat any hypo's with some orange juice or something, so it could well work.

im on the same insulin you are on and wudn recommend any type of fasting, ur on them for a reason, maybe take up more exercise and lower your carbs? but dont completely cut them out, you need to take your novorapid regulary, no? which you need to have carbs in your body to lower them, without them your body will start breaking down the fat in your body and send your bs threw the roof! so it means you would still have to eat during the day, but i found becoming vegetarian and excerciseing really lowered my bs and my insulin in take, maybe try that instead of fasting first and see how it works, but ye gotta remember it will take weeks even months to lower them and fasting is a quick fix that wont last
if you wanna talk pm me =]
