Honestly I am a bit lost on the issue. However, I do have my own opinion which my aunt seemed a bit amazed by the other day, so please tell me what you think.
I would like to start off by saying that I do not mind gays one bit, in fact my best male friend is gay. Anyway, so I believe that gays should have the same rights as every other married couple, however it should not be defined as a "marriage". And I dont only mean that just for gay couples...I mean that for any couples joined together under the government(meaning those married in court). For centuries a marriage has been a unification through a religious institution, so i dont understand why its not left that way. I feel as if we took the term marriage out of the equation that the issue as a whole wouldnt necessarily go away, but it would be severely diluted.
Basically, removing the term marriage would separate church and state as it is supposed to be done. Those couples who want a "marriage" can go to church for that(permitting there are gay friendly churches, because I still dont think someone should be forced to unify them if its against their religion) and those who dont want a religious unification gay or straight couples, should be defined in the courts as something else but have the same rights as anyone else.

I think marriage is a stupid, antiquated, useless institution and the gay community as a whole would be a lot better off if they (and everyone, in fact) took the attitude that they don't need some arbitrary title and legal documents to prove their feelings to anybody. That said, I know society isn't going to take this opinion overnight (even though many people today are becoming disillusioned and seeing that marriage is pointless) and so I fully support gay marriage because I know it pisses conservatives off that they will inevitably lose on that issue.
I also think that most people are completely ignorant of the historical purpose of marriage which was far much less love and romance and far more property and business.

Well first off, i would like to say that I am moderately conservative, and I dont take offense to people supporting gay marriage. But anyway, that is basically my point is that if people want to be unified under that government, it should be a different title than "marriage" whether you are straight or gay. But if people want the "marriage" title, they should go through theyre religious institution for that.

I don't care. I stand by what I said and I have no problem supporting things I'm otherwise indifferent to simply to belittle social conservatives. But that's a different debate in itself so I won't push the matter.
But if people want the "marriage" title, they should go through theyre religious institution for that.
Exactly. And not all religious organizations with the authority to wed people are against homosexuality, so gay couples who want the marriage title should go to those religious institutions.
I really fail to see who that's so hard to grasp. People on the against side of this argument act as though all religions and sects are opposed to gay marriage. They aren't- but for some asinine reason or another, current laws do not allow churches that are fine with homosexuality to perform homosexual weddings.
That's the stance anyone in favor of separation of church and state should take. If your church is against performing gay marriages, then you should simply go to a church that is willing to do that. They exist. Problem fucking solved.

Well to be honest i think we need to really think
marrige is a document is it not
i think what counts is love....love and thats it
if to people love each other they should not care what others think
remember its only a bit of paper that signifies love but at the end of the day a bond between to people counts more than a bit of paper

Sure. I still think the entire thing is stupid though and we'd all be a lot happier if we didn't get married at all. Of course, that's a social attitude that will take time to cultivate and not something I would ever pass legislation for. Cultural changes can't be forced by the law, it takes outspoken, charismatic and influential people to change opinions on a grand scale like that.

I agree with sage, marriage is a crock of bull shit. The only reason I will ever get married is so that I and my wife share legal and financial responsibilities (or if I knock her up). Gays should have the exact same rights. I don't care if its called a marriage, a life partnership, a legal union, etc. The point is that they have a way of sharing legal and financial responsibilities.
PS I'm mostly conservative except for my belief in gay marriage.

Thats the point Im trying to get across...the term "marriage" should only be given to you through your church, not by the government

I thought I said marriage was absolute bullshit? Besides I thought the church and state were to have nothing to do with each other. So how is it that through a religious ceremony you are granted legal and financial responsibilities?

I agree. No couple getting unified(or Marriage as a church term)under the government should be called Marriage.
I have no problem with marriage, you can think it's the wonderfuliest thing on earth or it's bull shit, that is your own opinion.I do how ever think it should remain in churches and not be up to the government.Nor do I think the government has any right to say what two consenting adults do in THEIR own house,THEIR room.
Just my two cents.

Does marriage relate to churches? I don't see how atheists can marry then, is there some atheist- friendly churches around? Obviously the government cannot take control of this affair, but marriages shouldn't be restricted to the control of churches. Does people of other religions have to call their marriages "unions" instead?
Am I missing something, or am I crazy?

Thats not what Im saying at all, where in my post did I say only Christians or only Buhdists, I said religion in general. Im saying throught history, "marriages" have been done through an individuals religion, not through the government....so those who want to be joined together under the govenment should have the unification represented under a different term, but still have the same rights as everyone else...the term that is scaring everyone is marriage, so thats why Im saying do away with it under the government.

Ok, we are on the same page, because the process of marriage should not be under the control of the government. That makes no sense, and the government officials are usually christians. They can't dictate how a personal affair should go.

religion as a rule, is find.... outdated. I can see the point in it, and I do believe that there is something out there. religion was made to make sense of what we could not understand. e.g. the fireball that turned Rome into a Christian empire, was actually a comet. on the topic of marriage though, i think that regardless of where you say the words and join two people together, it should be called a marriage, the word marriage means:
a.the social institution under which a man and woman establish their decision to live as husband and wife by legal commitments, religious ceremonies, etc.
b.
a similar institution involving partners of the same gender: gay marriage.
therefore, call it marriage. end of.
in terms of what i think of marriage and gay marriage, i think it is a good idea, in a world so fast and busy, i think it is good to take time out and show your love to the world.

Why is signing a paper and a traditional get together obligatory in terms of showing your love to the world?

My opinion is that we should all just get along. Yes, it'll be hard: there's always people who will hold their predjeduces, but it should be possible, someday.

If you can't even spell homosexuality correctly you shouldn't be debating about it.
I mean really what do you people enjoy this to me it is senseless
Well, you have to understand some men like men instead of women when they're born. Some like men and women. Some like only women. Then you can do the same with girls (girls that only like men, girls that like only women, girls that like men and women).
when I have kids I do not want to have them to ever haft to see 2 men or women making out in public that is what pisses me off the most
So a man raping an innocent toddler in public while puking on its face with a fifteen inch penis doesn't piss you off more than 2 men making out in public?
I hope to god Rick perry wins for 2012
He's already lost. I'm from the future. There's more homophobic douche-bag candidates you could choose to. Michelle Bachmann is still there.
Also, Rick Perry is a closeted homosexual. I've seen sex tapes of him.

You follow a book that condemns women who are on their period and people who shave their facial hair but not people who molest children. Your opinion doesn't matter. Go do something useful with your life instead of hating people and trying to control their lives. No body gives a fuck about your bigoted opinion.

So it seems the vast majority here would disagree with me but i think marriage and being married is a nice concept and it would be nice for it to be available to everyone who wants it. Being married only effects the people getting married so i think its a fair opinion.

Ain't none of my goddamned business. As long as people don't start forcing their opinions down my throat on either side, I'm neutral. It's none of my concern who people sleep with, live with, have feelings for, etc, as long as it doesn't effect my life.
