So my parents decided that because I had really good grades and stuff(I did?), that I deserved a new computer. I told them, "Nah, that's okay. I don't need one.", but they insisted. So I was like, "OK, sure. Your loss..."

So we went to Frys. That's a long story, best saved for a "Strange Customer Service Thread" post(If that even exists).
So here's what I have now:
An Acer Aspire Timeline X 3830TG-6431 with anIntel Core i5-2410M 2,3GHz and nVidia GeForce GT 540M and a 13,3" LED LCD and 4GB DDR3 Memory and a 500GB HD(Phew!).
And then some....

It costed about $840 or something.
It runs Microsoft Windows Home Premium :/

Now I haven't techically used Windows since Windows98. What's changed since then? Is my favourite editor, "EDIT", still on there? And what about IEXPRESS? I liked that utility.
Oh, and is it still C:\PROGRA~1\ with all my wonderful 16-bit programs?

Did I make a wise choice? I intend to use it somewhat for AutoDesk work. For the rest, it will be my other computer for when I need to be "compatible" with Windows.

So......what do y'all think?

As far as I know, 'Edit' was replaced by Notepad, as Notepad supports both larger files, and more file types. As well as being compatible with 64bit versions of Windows (Whereas Edit was only compatible with 32bit & below).
iexpress.exe still exists, yes.
And yes, to get to program files, it still is "C:\PROGRA~1\". If you have a 64-bit version of Windows, that will take you to where your 64 bit applications are installed. If you want to get to where your 32 bit applications are, it's in "C:\PROGRA~2\".

And yeah, it /is/ a pretty nice laptop, IMO.
If you get the chance, I'd upgrade to 7 Pro, but Home Premium is good enough. I just don't like Home Premium because it doesn't have proper domain support. (Logging into an Active Directory account on a domain) But meh. That's the geek in me having an issue with it, it's fine for personal use. :P

That's nice to know, thanks!

Hmmm....I'm not Microsoft's biggest fan, so I don't see that happening.

I still don't understand........must be Windows jargon. But is that a problem?

I didn't think you would. :P

It is Windows jargon. :P
Nah, it's not a problem, just something that annoys me slightly.

Active directory is basically the user system for Windows-based networks (That is, a network that is 'driven' by a Windows server). It's what allows you to login with the same username/password from any computer within the network. And Home Premium doesn't properly support it.
It's really not that important for you, as I highly doubt you have a Windows based network. :P

I'm not a Windows fan at all (as I sit here typing on my MacBook Pro) but I will say that it sounds like a pretty good computer. Personally, Windows Home Premium is better than 7 but that's because I have a personally vendetta against any computer running Windows 7.

*cough*MYOLDNETBOOK*cough*

I will warn though that Acer is not one of the greatest hardware companies. A lot of people like it but my mum works in computer maintenance and wouldn't let me get one if it came to buying a PC. Make sure you take care of the laptop though and you should be fine.

Rather have an Acer than a Dell.

Windows home premium is windows 7 lol.

Also, windows 7 is brilliant if you have the hardware to run it

I'll try :)

I hate Apple too(or the company, at least).

It is Windows 7; "Windows 7 Home Premium".

I will! *cuddles laptop*

I agree. My dad's Dell has really short battery life and gets really hot. So much for laptop

Windows 7......brilliant!? I beg to differ!
The UI is okay, I guess.

Oh, and I know what my favourite program is: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM~1\CMD.EXE :P
Very handy.

No, that was the problem! I don't even speak Dutch, so what happened to my autocorrect is beyond me. But it's back to British English now!
Sorry about being off topic

You're going to have to make it similar to OS/2 or DOS for me to be happy with a Windows system.
I just don't understand NTFS or NT. But hey, that's just me!

------
Oh, and now I have an issue with it:
The wireless card only works sometimes. For the rest, it says "Internet Access", but upon requesting a page, I get a "Server not found" Error. I try it 5 minutes later, and it works.
Now since the drivers are proprietary and probably undocumented, I wouldn't be able to figure out what could possibly be wrong!
"Windows Troubleshooter" was of little help(Surprise, Surprise!).
There were a lot of references to online help things, but there was a slight flaw in their logic........THE BLOODY WIRELESS CARD DOESN'T WORK!
So............any ideas? I haven't found anything online, but maybe I havn't looked in the right places.
Any help, preferably from one of our Windows Experts?
Thanx.

I've had a terrible history with them, poor quality. I definitely would've gone with HP or Dell.

I have bad experiences with Dell. HP, all of those were much too expensive or had that icky "Shared Video RAM", which is terrible for Autodesk work.

This computer works for me.
I still need to put openSuSE or Fedora 14(or 15, if I feel like it) on it, though.

Too late, I've had it since I started this thread(6 July 2011, 0:00)!
Besides, Windows does what I tell it to do(most of the time), so I'm happy for now. Then I come to the question of which other OS to run on it.
Currently I'm considering Fedora 15 or openSuSE 11.4(Only one of those two, I only like advanced RedHat-based systems. I just don't understand Debian's way of doing things.)

So yeah.
