This is going to sound really, really weird. But lately, I've been taking ibuprofen on a daily basis. Yes, I frequently get headaches, but I take it even if I don't have them. For instance, in the past 9 hours, I've consumed about 1800 mg of ibuprofen. Along with a couple allergy pills. Can you get addicted to ibuprofen? And is this harmful? I'm just really confused here...

I don't exactly have an answer for that, but I can say that I thought I was addicted to Ibuprofen at one point too. I was diagnosed with migraines about 2 years ago and I began taking Ibuprofen daily. And then some days, even when I didn't have a headache, I wanted to take the Ibuprofen anyways. Like I was craving it or something. It was really weird. But I made my mom take it away from me and now I always have a bottle of Excedrin Migraine ONLY for when I have headaches.

my mom is a nurse and has told me before that too much ibuprofen long term does liver damage..now I'm not saying that taking that many for like a day or so will...but for like a month or something just might...you might want to see a doctor or something.

LArge and consistant doeses of ibuprofen can cause liver damage and stomach ulcers. You need to stop with your comsumption and when you concume it at a regular pace your body becomes immune to it. With the immunity building you then have to take higher doeses, I would suggest you tell your parents.

Crap. I guess that's why, if I want it to actually work, I have to take high doses of it...Thanks, everyone.

I don't believe so, but your body can and will build tolerances.

8 ibuprofens for a minor headache and a 12 pack for a migraine is what I do.

I just kind of take them...for the hell of it. But yeah, in around those quantities. So I suppose I won't die.

An average male can take about 3000 mg of Tylenol before any type of damage occurs. Ibuprofen is stronger so I would think its less. ShatteredWings is right but that tolerance doesn't come without damage. Especially if you don't ease into the increasing amount. You can become addicted to it so try and monitor yourself a little better. Sounds like you may close to a problem..

In the intersest of true information, an adult can take more advil than tylenol, it effects the body (mainly, liver) less for it's dosage/effectiveness

The way this is written makes me cringe. Do you not realize the damage you do to your body with that much ibuprofen in one dose? There's a reason behind the "stomach ulcer" and "liver damage" warnings on the bottle...
Switch to excedrin. It's a migraine-sufferer's lifeline, trust me. That much ibuprofen does you no good - use another med and let your ibuprofen tolerance go back to normal.

At least Dog Desab takes a ridiculous dose for headaches...taking ibuprofen for no real use is akin to me opening a can of dog food and eating it "for the hell of it". It'll likely end with me throwing up or in some other unpleasant state, and I didn't get any "good" side effects from it (i.e. a high) - but hey, I needed to do something for the hell of it.
Who cares if you won't die? Stomach ulcers and liver damage in your 30s/40s ain't exactly a walk in the park. You could argue "well that won't happen because I take such a regular dose", and that's a seemingly solid argument; however, that regular dose soon becomes the norm, and then when you've got a splitting headache you've gotta pop 6 for some relief. And then what? You start popping that many every day, the same way your current pseudo-addiction started? It's not unlikely.
Find another drug - seriously, that's my best advice. If you're popping something as boring as ibuprofen that has no real "fun" to it, you're wasting your time and your internal organs' lifespan. Do something with a real high if you're that bored, because the path you're on doesn't really sound worth it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Tylenol somewhat different from Ibuprofen? Acetaminophen versus ibuprofen? I always thought Tylenol taxes your liver with more intensity. And I for one find barely any headache relief from Tylenol, at least not with a recommended dose. Ibuprofen has always been more effective for me for some reason, but I'm sure it varies between people.

It is a different drug, and Tylenol is more taxing on the system, you're right.
But I'd argue the effectiveness. I can take both - though most of my family can only take Tylenol - but tylenol is more effective for me. I'm taking 3-4 advil to work (Now note I'm like 115-120), but one tylenol Soooo.
Seriously. STOP taking so much, it's not helping you clearly. you've built up a major tolerance.
@The guy who said you could be addicted to advil
It's NOT A NARCOTIC. WTF are you talking about?

Oh my bad, yea ShatteredWings is right..I had to clarify with my friend..thats why you don't rush posts kids...an adult can take more Advil..which is basically Ibuprofen..than tylenol..and Tylenol does do more to your liver..Advil usually gives you a bad stomach ache
@Selena, Let me clarify..psychological addiction to it..not physical

I'm sorry it took me so long to reply, I've been busy. But thanks for all your input. And for the record, I'm not doing it for a high. I'm kind of hoping it will eventually do enough damage to kill me inconspicuously. If I was aiming for "fun," that's why I have access to cigarettes and/or alcohol. Which I don't find to be particularly good habits either, personally. But again, thanks for all your advice.

True. It can cause stomach ulceration if you take large amounts for extended periods (I would imagine > 1000 mg/day for more than two weeks). Ibuprofen is not addictive.

The fact that you told us your motives here online says to me that you want someone to stop you. You're not doing it in complete silence, you're asking for help. It won't kill you inconspicuously if you continue to build up your tolerance; you'll eventually consume enough to tear up your stomach. That'll be extremely painful and you'll be in the hospital for a while - but you won't die.
Talk to a counselor, therapist, friend, sibling, SOMEONE. You only get one shot at the life you're living; slowly killing yourself might seem worth it, but it's really a waste of time. There's too much out there to look forward to - too much knowledge to gain, too much money to earn, too much love to fall into. I hope you can see that life is truly worth seeing to the end.

You'll need to take more then 5 000 milligrams ibuprofen dialy before any serious damage occurs. Advil is suuuuuper safe compared to other similar drugs.

You should try to tell somebody about it. You won't get in trouble if you truly are addicted - but it can have long term effects.

The maximum daily dosage for ibuprofen is 3200mg. It can cause liver damage and stomach ulcers. Internal bleeding to. It can also cause heart attacks and strokes.
Do yourself favour and only take them when realy necessary.
