Authorities say the body of a woman who died in a Massachusetts public pool went undetected for days as swimmers continued to use the pool before the victim was found floating.

The body of Marie Joseph, 36, was discovered by teenagers Tuesday evening in the Vietnam Veterans Swimming Pool in Fall River, Massachusetts, according to Bristol County district attorney's spokesman Gregg Miliote.

Joseph had gone to the pool on Sunday with a 9-year-old neighbor and his family. She collided with the boy while the pair careened down a pool slide, Miliote said.

After the collision, the boy surfaced but the woman did not, he said.

It was not clear Thursday what happened after the collision or whether the boy and his family sought Joseph's whereabouts when they left the pool.

Authorities continued to investigate the cause of death Thursday.

The pool -- which is 12 feet deep at its deepest --- was described as "cloudy" by a health inspector who examined the pool Tuesday, according to the mayor of Fall River, William Flanagan.

A decomposing body can take a couple of days before it becomes buoyant, Miliote added.

"It is in many respects disturbing and unreal," said Massachusetts Conservation and recreation Commissioner Ed Lambert.

The lifeguards and managers of the swimming pool, along with the three health inspectors involved, have been placed on administrative leave, authorities said.

Twenty-four state pools have also been closed pending further investigation, according to Lambert.

Authorities say the swimmers who used the pool during the two days are not considered to be at risk for health problems.

Meanwhile, a host of Massachusetts state and municipal agencies are conducting independent investigations over the incident.

How the hell does a body not go discovered for that length of time in a public swimming pool? People were even using the pool. That's just disgusting.

That's gross. I can see how they would not notice though, if the pool is 12 feet deep and cloudy and the body is resting at the bottom of the pool, it would be pretty hard to see.
The thing that makes me WTF is that she went there with a boy and his family. They just left without her and found it normal she never came up from under the water? Seriously, what the fuck. :|

From what I heard, the little boy who went down the slide with her reported her as not coming back up, but the lifeguards ignored him.

At least we have laws requiring motorcyclists to wear helmets. Get with the program NH... -_- Saw way too many idiots when I went up to Maine 2 weeks ago.

I do wear a motorcycle helmet when riding thank you.
There's a difference between people who are smart and wear safety gear and those awesome, extreme, badass biker dudes who don't like living. We shouldn't need a law to enforce common sense. Not that my first post was supposed to be taken seriously or anything

It's very strange and disappointing that a body can just be in a pool and not be noticed like that. Despite not being able to see the body at the bottom of the pool, somebody must have touched it with their feet or something while swimming.

That's unbelievable. I'm a lifeguard, and I can only imagine that when work comes around monday, this is going to be stapled at our headquarters on the billboard to remind us why we do what we do, and to be alert.

That made me laugh. It's terrible that I laughed but that's how I felt until someone said that the kid reported her but they ignored him. Which is dumb

"disturbing and unreal" is an understatement to me in my opinion. Ugh, I can see something like this happening in Bones or some show like that.

I read another article yesterday about this. The mom said her son begged the lifeguards to aid the woman. and one lifeguard said she was on break and the other said the pool'll be checked but it never was
