View Full Version : The United States as a Military Superpower

So recently a (non American) friend of mine took a shot at the United States and our military power. They said our military strength was in rapid decline and we were doomed to fail. Little harsh IMO but completely bull crap! America still has the largest and most advanced military 10 times over! Anyone care to disagree come on down!

I'm not disagreeing, but instead, agreeing. Look at military expenditures alone. The United States spends $687 billion, above China's $114 billion and France's $61 billion (#s 2 and 3) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_military_expenditures). Also, in naval force, the United States Navy's battle tonnage is larger than the next thirteen navies combined. It's just that the army was trained for traditional combat, not to deal with guerrilla warfare and insurgencies. That is the weakness in the United States Armed Forces.

It's definitely not the largest, but their expenses far out do any other country in the world. China may have the largest, with Russia having the largest reserve, none compare to the expenditure of the United States, which is why it remains top.

Our military isn't bad,it's a little advanced, but we could be a little better.I think we be better off protecting OURSELVES instead of being the imperialist we are and being over in the middle east(general term,I know).

Our military can be quite scary since you know we get all the other parts of the world to agree with us.We are imperialist, and as soon as we(civilians) take our head out of the sand and see that is when we can tell our dicato- I mean government to leave the other countries.

At least one third of our taxes are spent on military. We could cut that into just 1/10 by taking our troops home and protecting us.A lot of that money could be going towards something good like funding more schools, promoting farms, and taking care of our people, but sadly it's going to the unnecessary war on terror.

My bad, just I'm not too much into the military's power and control.

I think we as human beings could be finding better ways to help ourselves instead of making massive weapons or super computers that can control others devices. We have so much potential ,yet we don't use it.

Super computers eventually trickle down to consumer use.

America has the world's most advanced army. An advanced army doesn't mean "most troops". That goes to China, but America's military technology is second to none, that's why it is the world's most advanced army. Because a force made of 50 people equipped with sticks can't defeat a force of 10 equipped with advanced weapons.

Like ScubaSteve said, military technology is usually made into civilian technology, i.e. jet engine.

Actually I was just pulling the numbers and the largest active military force (troop wise) is China as you said. BUT! Russia has the largest military in the world with over 2 mil in reserves. Followed by North Korea and South Korea surprisingly. Your last statement is very true. Iraq had the 4th largest military force in the world yet it only took us 48 hours to make them surrender unconditionally. Its all about technology not man power. We currently have 11 carrier battle groups! A battle group consists of 1 Aircraft Carrier, 2 Guided Missile Cruisers, 2 Anti Aircraft Warships, and 1-2 Anti Submarine Destroyers or Frigates. Not to mention we have over 600 ships in mothballs, 60 of which are older carriers. I was down in SD recently and saw 2 US carriers undergoing maintenance and it always pumps me up knowing we have such an impressive fleet! I love my country I just wish we weren't so "imperialist" as salt would put it I guess... lol

Check out the US Navy's new toy.

No fuck. It's super, ultimate, extreme, area 51, cutting edge, super-stealth, next generation, biomechanical, multi, omega, mega Advanced.

Our technology is outdated where to Iron Age, playah. We fight using dull blades, you guys use extreme satellite laser precision guided AI and manned 2 tonn ballistic missiles projected from a High-technology stealth-coated battleships and submarines.

I wouldn't like to be the one to face them... How long into the fight until the senate decides to push the little red button and unleash their nuclear arsenal... Yes, it's frowned upon, yes the country itself has said they don't want to use them.... But let's face it If the USA's loosing the fight, do you think they're going to give a fuck if they bare down on Beijing for example?

Thats the problem with warfare these days. The US, China, and Russia all have enough nukes to destroy the entire surface of the planet 400 times over. If an all out war in sues we are all screwed

We currently have no active battle ships in any of our fleets. But in less then 6 months we could have 15 retrofitted with state of the art systems. Not like we would ever need to.

They haven't released all of the tech specs on it yet but this is what I have so far. They are going to build 4 a year until all of the Nimitz carriers are in moth balls.

Im not disputing the fact that we may spend a to much on our military. I am however disputing the fact that Electric Nomad said we aren't the most powerful military superpower. Thats just nonsense.

And yet you complain about the US spending too much elsewhere. Well fucking look here - they spend far, far too much on their military when the money could go to much more important things.

Yes currently right now there isnt a huge need for such a huge armada especially when we are in third world countries like Pakistan, Iraq, and Afghanistan. But if North Korea decides to make an attempt to cross the DMZ and invade South Korea we have a problem. That drags both us and China into the war.

America is a " What Happens There Matters Over Here So We Go There and Kick Some Mustapha Ass In a Mountain " country and therefore they have to spend a lot of money to it's military, especially its navy since it is an island country. But yeah maybe 1/3 is too much, but that does not make the US of A fascist.

Please show evidence that proves your bold statement. If you read the numbers I have posted it makes complete sense. Well for those of us who know what we are looking at.I didn't make any statement. You are the one who is making statement from the start of the discussion -- fuck, the purpose of this whole thread, niggah.
It isn't nonsense its 100% fact and you know it.This shows how smart you are.

Thats why you haven't brought any evidence to the table that disproves mine.To disprove what? You didn't propose anything. Just making a cyclic statements after statements of how America can beat Poo[-]r[/-]kistan.

There isn't a single country in the world, not Russia, not China and certainly not the UK that rivals the United States as a military superpower. If your going to present evidence to the contrary please do so. Otherwise don't dispute a known fact. Ow fawk. America can destroy russia and china, and that's an indisputable fact. Shit.

Thats that :) Hmmm wheres Pakistan? Ahh there it is towards the bottom.Among the top ten or fifteen, then that's not bad. There are around 200 countries out there. It only take two of the top ten, to topple down America's military.

American soldier are not invincible super-soldier machines; but it seems you have a difficulty to grasp that fact.

How many times do you want to me to say "I admit"? I told you already. America is a sure superpower - just not the only one and of course not the No.1.

America comes first because of the sheer number of machineries, is all.

I think you can read the reason as to why it's the first from the link you gave me:
The United States (GFP formula value of 0.184) remains the undisputed leader of our list thanks to their staying "active" in global hotspots, showcasing the world's largest navy and continuing to poor in gobs of money into defense.

The only country that can partially claim (and I mean like .01%) more advanced weaponry than the US of A is Israel. Israel is very militaristic and have some pretty incredible technologies. Then again, we very much support them, so no worries about fighting them.

If not F-22, they are going to buy F-35(20 already have been bought, only needs to be delivered) from the company that makes them directly.

I actually, really do, admire the IAF. My friend is a Semite, but Palestinian. So, he keeps boasting about how IAF is strong and stuff, and got me into all that Air Force thing.

Israeli, as history have shown, has the best air superiority in Middle-East.

America is probably first, second by Russia, no doubt.

If America goes head on with Russia, the result will not only be awesome but devastating.

I haven't been able to read all of the responses here, but does anyone know if North Korea spends more money on their military than the United States does? I believe North Korea spends most of their money on their military. In comparison to how much the US spends in regards to spending on other aspects, I mean. The United States spends the most in terms of how much money, but in comparison to how much money they spend on the military in comparison to what they spend on other things, isn't North Korea the highest?

Just because North Korea spends most of it's money on the military doesn't necessarily mean that that's an awful lot in comparison to large country's such as the USA. North Korea probably isn't much larger than England and can not compete in financial terms. They do let their people starve through famines whilst they support their military but what money they spend isn't that much, the vast majority of all their equipment is from the Cold War. The USA spends upwards of $700,000,000,000 on their military, North Korea can't even dream of that much money.

They do however have the largest number of reserve forces, as the entire nation is expected to fight if need be.

Bimmerhead,

The fact you have posted this after you have made your decision and opinion so strong really means all you want is a fight. America IS the most advanced military in the world. But throughout history the most advanced systems have not always won. I will cite the death of captain cook (the man who founded australia). His team were equip with the most advanced weapons on the time. But they were outnumbered by savages equip with only sticks and stones. The savages won based on numbers along. Many countries have the numbers over america and although the war would be bloody it could result in the demise of america as it is today. As for the nukes, the second america launches one every one of it's allies will turn their guns on america no matter where it is aimed.

Bimmerhead,
As for the nukes, the second america launches one every one of it's allies will turn their guns on america no matter where it is aimed.

That would be completely dependent on the circumstances, there would definitely be an inquiry, but they wouldn't turn hostile, unless it was an unprovoked attack against another allied nation.

Not the strongest! Your comment is ridiculous to say the least. Name ONE other super power with a military half as well trained and advanced as the US.
Erm, you are aware that a fair few of your forces are trained by british service personnel. I also hope you are aware that we did a test in which your marines failed our marine selection, and british marines set new records on yours.

If the United States went to war with every single country in the world right now we would win! (provided it doesn't end in a probable nuclear Holocaust in that case everyone loses)
Numbers arent everything, strategically your being dicked royally by a gang of rebels with 7.62 rifles and outdated RPG's. and hey with all that training it only took you what? 10 years to find the guy you were looking for. How amazing the money and supposed training only took 10 years to find one bloke.

As well trained there are many military's, it could even be said that the British army is better trained in certain circumstances.
We are, Britain is trained more efficiently, we are the most well trained and prepared force for the amount of money we put into the armed forces. and thats with a fraction of americas funding, imagine if we had even more money going into it.

You claim that's it's the "strongest" ONLY "super-power" that can beat anything. I want you to provide valid evidences, and numbers to prove logical points.

Who you were against, again? Some backwater country's extremist military whose technology passed it's 40th birthday. That's who you were against.
My point exactly

Here are some numbers for you!
US Navy
333,642 active duty personnel[2]
286 ships[2]
3,700+ aircraft
11 Aircraft carriers
9 Amphibious assault ships
9 Amphibious transport docks
12 Dock landing ships
22 Cruisers
59 Destroyers
30 Frigates
75 Submarines
Here are the numbers of the second largest navy in the world the Royal Navy (mind you their technology is inferior in every way to ours)
Available manpower;
38,190 Regulars[1]
3,600 Navy Volunteers
Reserve manpower;
19,560 Regular Reserve[2]
99 ships including RFA
240 aircraft of the Fleet Air Arm[3]
1 Aircraft Carrier (2 in construction)
1 Amphibious assault carrier
6 Destroyers (3 in construction)
13 Frigates
11 Submarines (5 in construction)
15 Minesweepers

Now please tell me we arent militarily vastly more powerful then any other country in the world with more active duty carriers then the rest of the world combined!
Who gives a flying fuck about numbers, Britain is a fraction of the size of America, we dont need to have as many forces to defend ourselves.

As my final point i leave you with one final force, as the final plume in the british forces military strength.

OK. As I am reading this I am seeing a lot of ignorant Americans that don't have a single clue about world affairs and other countries. Some do, who put their ideas through intelligently with careful consideration of other cultures for which I respect and am grateful. And as for the ignorant argument against my nation of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, makes me extremely angry. Let us not forget that if it wasn't for the United Kingdom, the United States wouldn't have been created, the Americans who post these arrogant ideas would not have been born. Not just for that reason, but show some respect.
I am a huge military supporter and am very proud of HM Armed Forces, and for all the United States' faults, I admire their military. However, this superpower status has often brought out the worst in some people who come across as very arrogant.
Some Americans here have called my nation 'America's bitch'! This is the arrogance and ignorance I am talking about. The United Kingdom enters most conflicts that the United States enters BECAUSE WE ARE ALLIES!!! That's what allies do! I thought that was evident already. And we are still a military power (ranking joint 3rd with France for military expenditure in recent years) and am more than able to operate on our own. The Fawklands war was fought entirely on our own, 8000 miles away from our mainland. An interesting thought is that the United States considered a British re-conquering of the islands as 'militarily impossible'.
Sorry for ranting on like this, but I feel very strongly about this and am annoyed that many ignorant people are ruining the appearance of the greater US public.

It's indisputable that our country has a very strong military force. On the other hand I believe it is going to go down the shitter. There are two thing that make a nation great. Those are its economy and its military. One cannot exist without the other. Without an economy a military cannot be funded. Without a military the economy cannot be defended. When one goes down the shitter the other follows. Now who can tell me which of the two (military or economy) is going down the shitter first.

Magus

Without a military the economy cannot be defended. Japan, after world war II, has only a defence force yet its economy was and is stable and there were economic booms and it is predicted that there will be more in the future.

alright then 9/10 times (Japan being the exception) an economy will fail without a military. When you say "defense force" do you mean a force that defends the country from being invaded? If so that's really the only type of military you would need. If that's the case disregard the opening sentence. Besides if we're talking about the US and I asked which of the two was failing the correct answer was economy. Even if an economy can theoretically last without a military it IS impossible to fund a military without some form of economy.

Now I admit the USA is advanced militarily-wise.
But it's far from the world's best. This isn't the Cold War anymore, they aren't on the top of the world.

Besides their in 14 trillion dollars of debt. You'd think that they would be smart and try to help their economy instead of use it on tanks in a war they already lost.

But you have to ask yourself whats gonna happen when china decides they're not really our friend and wants some of the money we owe them. Yeah not for another 50 years! Our technology is vastly superior the China's. Plus to get that size invasion force over here from the other side of the world would be incredibly hard seeing as we see everything! If China were to make a move they would take India way before they touched us. China HATES India and India has 1.1 Billion people. So if they are looking for "slave labor" as you say India would be the most logical choice. Plus they share a border. Also China isnt our friends! We dont like them! lol
