What are your thoughts on the possible supervolcanoes underneath Yellowstone? They supposedly could take out more than half of the U.S. population and could kill people in Canada or do serious damage to their health. Supposedly this eruption is several thousand years over due. For more info go here:http://dsc.discovery.com/convergence/supervolcano/under/under_03.html

I highly doubt that will happen.

they've been talking about that for years
if its gonna happen
its gonna happen
i hate to break it to ya but theres not much we can do
and when it does go weither thats tommorow or in another 2.5million yrs it will do global damage
America and Canada of course will be hit harder then say Australia but the dust kicked up into the atmosphere will do allot of damage everywhere

nothing we can do
so why worry about it

Something like that is called destiny
its out of our hands hun

I was talkin to my friends about it today and they said that the U.S. would probably be evacuated, and they were joking about taking over China and becoming the United States of China. Do any of you truly find this as a laughing matter? Do any of you actually want this to occur? (By want this i mean the eruption not the taking over of china)

Everyone shits themselves over that stupid supervolcano, but no one ever notices the gigantic verneshot (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verneshot) forming under siberia.

Posers.

So, nobody lives in siberia it is too cold.
Plus siberia is huge, about the size of half the U.S.
If it did go off the lava would cool very quickly, thus limiting the affect area.

verneshot =/= volcano

If the verneshot in russia goes off it will send a huge chunk of a tectonic plate into the stratosphere, and things that go up have a tendency of going back down.

It would be the same as if a giant meteor hit the planet, dur.

EDIT: I'll put it into terms easier for you to understand.

Take a sharp knife, put the handle (that's the part that doesn't cut you when you grab it) and put in your mouth.

Cock your head back so that the tip of the knife is sticking straight up in the air.

Now spit out the knife as hard as you can, wait for results.

That's pretty much what happens with a verneshot.

Its going to be the super volcano, no I mean the asteroid, no its gonna be a mutated bird flu, no its going to be terrorism, no its going to be nuclear war, no its going to be global warming, No its going to be killer bees, no its going to be over use of DDT, no its going to be Y3K (as opposed to Y2K), no its going to be the Aztec prophesied end of the world...... (the list goes one and continues to grow)

Im really not to worried about Yellowstone. my money is on Y3K

What about the supposed apocalypse thats supposed to occur in 2012?
Neways cmpcmp you bring up a good point that there are lots of future problems that the U.S. and the whole entire world will face, but i started this thread to discuss the yellowstone eruption, and Lt. Col. Environment, you might want to make a thread about the verneshot rather than talk about it here. I'd rather you argue about the possible supervolcano under yellowstone than about all the future hindrances that this world is to face.

the verne shot theory is very interesting... I've seen like ten shows on the yellowstone eruption, national geographic channel is just about having a heart attack over it. I'm not worried, there's no point in being worried about something nobody can do anything about

Dammit, why does it seem like I am born in a generation which will see the end, or near end, of the fucking world??

Yeah, it sucks. It seems like all the problems caused by the people of generations before us are left in our hands and that we have to fix them. It sucks, but we'll have to face challenges like everyone else. Who knows maybe we'll go extinct and be replaced by a more complex species. Or maybe an ice age will occur to rival global warming and the world will be stuck at 60 degrees farenheit? The thing is, who knows? It sucks to not know, but thats life... And life seemingly sucks.

k.

It's going to happen and there's absolutely nothing we can do about it, all there's left to speculate on is when it's going to blow.

My money is on ten minutes from now, or in a trillion years, somewhere in that time window.

i live 50 miles from yellowstone  so if it does.... well i wont be talking to you for a while

If you live there and the eruption occurs we probably won't be talking to you ever again unless you ghost haunts this website.... But on the bright side this will occur with very little notice and you'll die a slow, painful death. (j/k although its partially true), but actually this could happen anywhere from in the next few weeks to the next few thousand years, so we might not even need it to cause human extinction, or maybe you'll of moved somewhere else by the year 4000. =P

yeah lol. well the nice thing about living near it is most likely i will die pretty fast whal the rest of the world slowly gets ingulfed with ashes and smoke causing a second ice age and people will slowly die from starvation and disease!
lol idk what will happen to the rest of you but i think id rather go first. then die slowly!

But when's this going to happen/how likely is it that it will happen?

Underground_Network
February 15th, 2007, 08:56 AM
There is a 100% chance of this occurring unless the earth gets like destroyed from something else, and as i said earlier we're hundreds of thousands of years behind schedule (meaning this was supposed to happen along time ago), so this could happen any time from like a week from now (because we'd be notified if it began to build up, but it may amount to nothing, so they would not evac the U.S.), or it could happen in a thousand years. Its near impossible to predict.
