Germany was pushed back until eventually the Allied forces marched into Germany and Hitler killed himself. Europe was in shambles from all the fighting and bombings.
The conquered land was split up between the Soviets, Americans, and the British. Americans and British established democracies, while the Soviet Union established communism in the conquered countries. Germany was divided in half between these two. During this time was also the Cold War, between the Soviet Union and the US, which came close to becoming violent many times but luckily didn't or else there would have been a nuclear war.

I would start out by reading there. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_World_War_II_%281945%29 That is another good resource for the final six months of the War. For what happened after go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aftermath_of_World_War_II
These articles give much more detailed and thorough descriptions than you'll get here, but make sure you check the citations to be sure that they are reliable.
