A few months ago in my US History class a classmate said this quote her father told her "if you're a republican when you're young you have no heart, if you're a democrat when you're old you have no brain." I was wondering what everyone here thought about that

Its a bunch of BS. Honestly, republicans can be compassionate and democrats can be smart. She was just conforming to her dad.

I would just like to say, it doesn't matter what side of the scale you choose or how old or how young you are, if you don't understand what you label yourself as, you don't need to engage in any political conversation, or event.

That's more true when it refers to the left wing party/conservative party in countries with a broader political spectrum. The Democrats are generally actually center-right in the grand scheme of things.

It should be, "if you're ever a Republican or Democrat in your life, you're a fucking idiot."

Well then I suppose you have a perfect party then :P Because all systems of government have flaws.

There's no perfect party. You have to take concepts from every party, including third parties.

But I guarantee there will be flaws still. No system of government could come close to perfect. All I'm saying is calling people idiots for being democrats and republicans doesn't make sense because no party can truly have all the flaws rooted out. It is like pointing one persons flaws and ignoring someone equally flawed but with different flaws.

I consider Democrats and Republicans idiots because the people who vote them into power are completely oblivious to just how similar they are. They both share the same disgusting social conservative values to pander to the pathetic, spinless family values lobbyists. They both suck up to corporations. They both have displayed absolutely no ability to trim the debt or properly regulate the economy (they do it too much, but in different ways).
A well-studied voter would realize this, but a majority of Americans either have a completely irrational dedication to one party that they'll never give up, or they'll flip-flop between voting Democratic and Republican. Nobody ever gives consideration to the third parties, or to being an independent.
The Democratic and Republican parties together have more flaws than any other party because they're more corrupt and hypocritical than the other parties.

dont you think it's a bit egotistical to assume that most Americans don't know what they're doing?

Most people don't know what they're doing when it comes to politics, no. That's why we have these two absolutely ridiculous political parties ruling. If most Americans were better-versed in politics and stopped buying into propoganda spewed by both wings of the political spectrum, they wouldn't vote for either party.

How about you vote for a person instead of a party?
or should we all become anarchists?
This would be the best thing to ever happen to any country.

.
Word.People are way to obsessed with one party, and seem to only vote that party. You vote the good person it,not the one in the party.
