Many chemist know that Thorium has some of the properties that Uranium has,and more.Thorium in a way is like Uranium on steroids, and it's way more abundant, and it is way more cleaner. It can power a power plant longer ,cleaner, and hardly no nuclear waste.Thorium does have to be processed and "cleaned" a little more then Uranium, which can cost more if it is to be used in a breeding reactor, which most are designed for uranium.

Sadly if we have been using thorium instead of uranium,a lot of nuclear accidents would have been avoided, and ones that leave radiation, like the one we're in with Fukushima, would be less damaging.
Here are just a few facts about why thorium is better.

Thorium is much more abundant in nature than uranium.

Thorium produces 10 to 10,000 times less long-lived radioactive waste

There is enough thorium in the United States alone to power the country at its current energy level for over 1,000 years.

Sadly only a few countries are using Thorium.India is on those who are taking the higher road for them and the environment.

Simply put, when people think of nuclear power, or indeed "nukes", people think Uranium or Plutonium. I think Thorium, and its radioisotopes, would make excellent fuels but sadly it'd take a lot of PR work to convince the masses.

That being said, I think our focus should be on Nuclear Fusion and it's [massive] potential.
