I love the martial arts. My parents got me started because I wasn't really interested in any other sport outside of track and they thought I needed to do something other than stay inside and play video game and read comics. :) I totally got hooked into. It's a great workout and I've met alot of cool people. It is different from all that MMA stuff on tv. I study Isshinryu Karate and just recently promoted. I like the sparring probably the best but also doing the Katas. Some of the philsopohies are really cool too.

Is there anyone else who studies/studied a martial art?
If so, what style, did you like it, and do you still study?

i took shotokan karate for two years. I stopped a year ago because i was so overloaded with schoolwork and personal issues. I was a yellow belt. Still remember most of the first two katas -sigh-

Sorry to hear that man. I wouldn't give up on it. You may still find a way!

Lilys--I know it can be tough balancing everything. I'm found that this past year in HS and running track and trying to keep up w/ classes. Some of our techniques come from Shotokan.

It's not much different then dancing once you get into it, it just kinda flows, but ya, it's fun. Btw it was originally a dance done by brazilian slaves, and was adopted into martial arts, very cool :)

Sounds like a cool style. I'll have to check it out some time. Maybe the reverse is true and it can help me dance better. :yeah:

I used to do Tai Kwon Do but got bored after I done my first grading. Yellow tag or something. The teacher wasnt very good tbh. That sucks. It's just like in school, the teacher can make the difference. There's alot of different instructors at my school and most of them are pretty good. There's a couple that I just won't go to their classes.

Muay Thai:) I have just started but I actually love it!!!!!That's awesome!!!!! I don't know much about Muay Thai but from what I saw, it looks like a good workout.

I studied Kick boxing for about 5 years but I stopped when I moved onto my GCSE's, would quite like to go back to it.5 yrs is pretty good amount of time. I know a few ppl in my school did it when they were younger and now came back as adults. BTW, just a side note: what are GCSE's?

I would love to try a form of martial arts. We have Tae Kwon Do, Karate and Tai Chi masters in the area. Tai Chi got my interest most because it seems like it can be somewhat healing.

My biggest issue is that I can only devote about 6 months out of the year to it. They seem to want you to train continuously, which I understand. January through July I am pretty much totally dedicated to baseball.

Yeah that can make it tough b/c some schools sign you up for 1 yr contracts and stuff that can conflict with other sports. Maybe try looking into an adult education class through the HS or some colleges that you can sign up for. Most of them are only like 10 wk program. It's a start until you can work out a better schedule.

Two Black Belts in Tae Kwon Do, took me ten years to get there but I worked hard and I have been in Tai Che for a little over a year. I love the beauty and grace that is required and I turn my TKD into something that people enjoy watching because of my grace, percisiion and fluidity.

I used to do Krav Maga through an MMA group.
I was a Graduate 3 (Blue Belt) before I left, but the grading and belt system are totally different to Asian martial Arts

It is a very good skill, and it has helped me a lot fitness wise, as well as a few fights, as mich as I try to avoid them. I eventually quit mainly because of the time it would take to move on and as well with the fact that the teacher scared the sh*t out of me :)

Actually, that is a common misconception about Capoeira. It was actually created by the brazilian slaves to rebel against their owners. they just called it a "traditional dance" so they wouldn't get killed from practicing it. I know this for a fact, as i have lived in brazil and have met the decendents of those brazilian slaves and in their community, from father to son, tell them the story of capoeira and how the slaves started capoeira. Joćo Pereira dos Santos who i met two years ago was an awesome man. he was one of the world's best capoaira artist/teachers. but yea it is now a days used more of a dance than martial arts(atleast in brazil)

Unless you count wrestling as a martial art, then i don't study any, but if you do, then i do wrestling.

Does it teach how to defend against these things are how to even use them?
