View Full Version : Delete super-inactive members.

I dunno if this should go in Suggestions or here, but I don't really care.

I decided today that I was either going to bash, welcome, or report spamming noobs.

Preamble and stuff
Just for laughs, I looked on the very last page of the member list (http://www.virtualteen.org/forums/memberlist.php?&pp=30&order=desc&sort=joindate&page=995). And what do I find? People who haven't made one damn post since they registered in 2004!

So what I mean is:
Delete(yes DELETE) those people, as to make space in the VT databases.
Unless that's not an issue. Then don't bother with it.
But still, I am amazed(to say the least) that some people still haven't posted since 2004.....:what:

What if they decide to come back though? I see it all the time. Members who have registered even one to seven years ago re-emerging for whatever reason it is. I wouldn't, honestly. If we needed to free up space, I know that there are a large amount of old members who are either bots or overage who have been looked over.

True, but it seems unlikely. I've tried PMing one and VMing others, maybe they'll respond. You never know....

Dang, you reply fast......:P

Oh, and by the way:
545th post!!
:woot:

Also, what I didn't think of in my first reply is we don't delete members. Very, very seldom do we. It messes with the archives, the past posts, I believe is the reason. I do see them coming back as well, it might just be my experience in the Psych Ward, but members who thought they didn't need VT any more realizing that they do still need support.

Mmm, that's me, your neighbourhood insomniac psych mod with quick reflexes. :3

But if they had no posts , then what is there to archive?

They've had a chance of about 8 years, some are probably in their 20s, and others.........maybe.

This idea gets floated around once every so often. It just isn't going to happen. You never know who may choose to come back, even if they never posted.

well couldnt you send them an automated email sayiing something like your account has been inactive and will be delete within a week if you do log in and use your account or something like that ???

From what I remember, there was a thread a while ago where someone asked just how large VT's file size is, and it was surprisingly small. Saving space isn't an issue in the slightest, nor do I imagine it'll ever be.

You're quite right. I even posted in that thread. Amazing, no?

But when it does become an issue - what happens then?

If the account's that old they may not check that email anymore.

Then there will be much more effective ways to relieve it than deleting old member accounts, which each take up a tiny amount of database/server space.

There's no real problem with this suggestion, but also no real point to deleting the oldest members. In favor of keeping a consistent policy on account deletion (we only do it for special, compelling circumstances), we're not going to start here.

Okay. Never mind, then.

This was brought up in like 06 and caused a huge fight. Personally I think if they haven't made a post yet they probably aren't going to.

Wow, just, wow. I'm literally speechless. Please tell me this is a joke of some kind.

Skipping every post in this thread and replying to the OP. I administrate a forum with way more than this forum.

Forum I Administrate
Threads: 114,955, Posts: 2,951,476, Members: 106,041

VT
Threads: 86,816, Posts: 1,161,211, Members: 34,800

And the database on the forum I administrate is only about 700MB, which really isn't that much in my opinion. So I don't this forum will have much issue. I mean, the forum runs smoothly so I don't think your suggestion needs to be followed through. :p

PLUS, deleting member will most likely cause inaccurate stats for future members. ie. If 10,000 inactive members are to be delete it will show new users that this forum will only have 20,000 (when older members know we've had more). Bigger stats attract new users.

If that happened, I (and some other members wouldn't be here) so no that's not going to happen. I even know a guy that made his account 3 years ago, has not made a post since and came back a couple months ago.

If those pre-2005 don't come back, and want to come back, they can make a new account. Yes, making an account takes 2 minutes and won't hurt, really.

I don't see old members taking up space as a really big problem, ever. The only thing I see people ever complaining about those members is the usernames being short and simple. If you don't like the fact they have your desired username, deal with it.

I think we've pretty much covered this topic by now.
