Hey, I hope someone can help me. A friend of mine recently had a virus on her laptop and it wiped the system clean. Someone told her she should have made an image of the system. Since I have alot of school documents on my computer can anyone explain how I can go about making an entire backup of my laptop? Much appreciated for any replies.

i bought an external hard drive with software, plugged it into my computer and it runs backups.

I also have a portable external drive for carrying around all of my work & school documents.

There are a few out there and I am sure that you can "google" it to see other options but the one I use and recommend is Clonezilla, it is free and will require you to make a boot disk. It is a little hard (at first) to navigate, but works on any platform and is very solid and works GREAT. http://clonezilla.org/

UPDATE (6/19/11):

Windows 7 had a utility built in (I have NOT personally used it so I do not know how well it works) . If you do, post your experience please and let us know:

I assume you are using Windows 7.
There should be a backup utility in there somewhere, right?(I'm no Windows NT+ expert)
I thought there was one in Control Panel.

Or, like others have said: buy an external hard drive, preferably one with software, and back it up. Go to your local computer store, and talk with a salesperson. DON'T let them rip you off, though! Usually, the 500GB should be around $94AUD.
