This is a picture of the tattoo I want. It will be on the underside of my forearm. More towards my wrist.
I want to be an ER doctor. When I turn 18 I'm getting a tattoo of a butterfly on my forearm because of my self harming issues. I'm not planning on it to be big, only like an inch or so, with a little decoration around it. Will this be an issue when I work? Could I not get hired because of it? How do you think patients would feel?

Your employer or interviewer for any job might look more negatively at such a thing. It's probably best not to get one, or get it somewhere more discrete.

I would suggest getting it someplace on your arm where it could be covered with a bracelet or a watch.

Either this or get it more upward on your arm. My brother got the equality sign on his forearm but on the inside of it. He can cover it up with a long sleeve shirt if he wants. When you get your tattoo just make sure that you can cover it up somehow with clothing or accessories.

Honestly, I think a butterfly wouldn't be much of a problem.
It's a simple, non threatining tattoo

All depends on who interviews you..should be fine..as long as it isn't a gang tattoo

I'd suggest make sure all tattoos are in places easily covered by clothing. Many patients may even request a switch of surgeons if they see a tattoo. Get it somewhere easily covered, such as leg, upper arm, chest etc.

I don't get why tats have such a negative connotation in todays society.
Anyways, seeing as how its a butterfly and it is on the UNDERSIDE of your wrist, and as an ER practitioner you will be in long sleeves and gloves, i have yet to see a problem with it.
If a place won't hire you because you have a tattoo on your wrist for a positive reason then it isn't a place I'd want to work at.

In the UK, the NHS (and most other healthcare providers) really do shun you having tattoos where they are clearly visible e.g. on your arms, neck e.t.c. From what I've gathered, this is the same in most countries.
I couldn't see a small tattoo such as what you want to get stopping you completely from getting the job, but, as has been mentioned, it's something that might be frowned upon slightly. Just keep it somewhere which wouldn't be visible if you were wearing ER doctor scrubs :P

I agree with this. As long as it's not bad or anything, it shouldn't be a problem

just make sure it can be completely covered. I wouldn't get a tat if your going for any real job because it is always frowned upon by an interviewer.

You could always wait until you got the job to be totally safe. My friend got a job then slowly got piercings and tats giving her coworkers time to adjust to the slight change between each one. Honestly just ask upfront. I see no reason why a butterfly would cost a job, i bet most kids and patients willlove it anyways

I think right on your wrist some where easily covered by thick bracelets would be okay.

I know in my country ,most employers don't accept tattoos below the wrist,so if u get it a bit higher to be safe
