You could totally just walk up to her and say, "Hey! Do you have a date for the dance?" And if she says no, say, "Oh, well good! I don't have on either, and I would be honored if you would be mine."

I don't think it sounds desperate, I think it's cute. :)
Seriously, there's nothing wrong with just going up to her and asking if she'd like to go with you. I mean, if you don't ask, how are you going to know?

Autum's way is nice but if you want something out of the usual consider this:
Buy 1 red/pink rose and write a note (make sure it's legible!) saying, "Your beauty surpasses that of this rose. Will you go to the dance with me? Sincerely, Timothy". Place the rose somewhere she'll get it (rush to her next period class and place it on her desk or ask a teacher to do it. Or on/in her locker)

Eh, I mean, I guess I'm the wrong person to be giving advice here, because I'm not a romantic in that sense.
In my opinion, it's a dance, not a wedding proposal, flowers aren't needed.

This.
It's really not that big a deal..

I'm not suggesting a bouquet of flowers, but a single rose is a really nice gesture to show that you care. Imagine her eyes when she sees that 1 lone rose resting upon her desk with a note that compliments her beauty.
I'm a bit of an old fashion romantic, but you did ask for something other than the normal, "will you go with me?" and I think the rose is definitely it.

I know it's just a single flower, just from my point of view, it wouldn't be needed. Granted, I don't know the girl he's asking, she might be into that kind of thing. I just wouldn't want that for me.
You could always spray paint the area in front of her car asking her. Now that's class.
