The definition is generally Western Europe, the U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. They are countries that are either Western European or whose culture is derived from Western Europe. Some also consider South Africa, Israel, Japan, and the Philippines who have European and/or American elements in their culutres. What do YOU think?

I consider it this way.
Western Hemisphere = Western Country
Eastern Hemisphere = Eastern Country

I wouldn't really define Israel as being even close to European. The culture of Israel is Arab/Jewish which is native to the Middle East, even its geography is right in the Middle East. I never knew this was even considered to be close to Western.
Japan has adopted some slightly Western elements recently but some Westerners love associating Westernization with Modernization. I'd still say Japan is East Asian.
South Africa is definitely African. The white South Africans are not native to the land, South African culture is purely African no doubt.
As for the Philippines, I have no clue about their culture. How come you didn't add South America to the West? What would you class them as?

I'd consider "The West" to be:
- America
- Canada
- Europe
- Australia/New Zealand
- Maybe Russia
There might be a few other individual countries I'm forgetting.

- Maybe Russia
Despite Russia's conflicting communist/socialist ideologies that clash with western ideologies like, Capitalism (America)?
For some odd reason I just wouldn't include Russia into the Western world.

Russia is part of eastern Europe and Asia. In most contexts Russia (and Eastern Europe) is not considered "Western." In fact back in the day, Russia made efforts to adopt the culture of Western Europe. Interesting in Asia and the Middle East all of Europe is deemed Western.

We have a Western outlook on our government. I class our country as heavily Westernized, even if we aren't as developed as them.
Now, I think classing is also centric on culture and politics, apart from geographical location. We were, particularly, a previous colony of the Americanos, so I have no doubts on where we found our western habits.

They're also Catholic.A lot of there food is aquatic life, vegetables, and a staple of rice. She said it's kinda hard over there to get meat like cow and pig. They're very nice people.

My definition of the "West" Are NATO countries, with a few exceptions and additions to the list.
Yes, because russia is still the soviet union.

Americans, americans. Most of you don't understand what Socialism means or is like when enacted. It's hardly a factor you can consider when looking at western countries. I enjoy my free healthcare, thank you very much.
Russia isn't western because its still corrupt and poor as dirt, and then in Siberia its governmentless and nuttier the farther inland you go.

South Africa, Australia or New Zealand CANNOT be "West". They are not in Europe or they don't lie left of Europe. Justo nly because people speak English there doesn't mean they should be West.
We shouldn't be splitting the world into West and East by alliances, but by geography

Who are you to say what we should and shouldn't be doing? Sure, you can go all literalist with the topic, but that's not really the topic's intent.

True, you don't. However, referring only to the geographical aspect of the phrase "Western World" is pointless. No shit everything in the Western Hemisphere is in the West, but it's not what people refer to to when they say "The West", or "The Western World". What they're referring to is a type of culture, not a geographical location.

Completely agree. South America is in the West. But its countries are still not regarded as 'Western' because of their culture.

He is saying you shouldn't HAVE to determine east and west worlds. Not that we are in the west and should be western.

*Not that we are in the western hemisphere and are therefore the western world. Although that is what we should realistically be going by because the "east" has a negative stigma to it which feels archaic in the 21st century.

Why not? What's wrong with categorizing things based on their characteristics?

What about China, Japan, India and any of the powerhouses in the eastern part of the world? I don't think they are stigmatized in some way. In fact, we may as well call them Western if geography was to shift them to the western hemisphere. We aren't that lost in today's trends, so as to speak.

Not really. We include meat in our food almost everyday. In fact, I rarely see fish on our table. Don't forget, we're also colonized by the Americans and (taken by force) by the Japanese. Yeah, we're a melting pot of cultures. I'm only nominally Catholic. Fuck the Church.
Off topic: Are we really that nice? :P
