Hey iam 15 y/o and a couple of days ago went to the beach with friends, about half of the group were lighting up druing the whole day(some of them practually chain smoking) which at one point i asked if i could take a puff. My first puff i coughed ALOT and asked them how the hell they can put up with it. But then later that day i gave it another puff and liked. That lead to me stealing drags off everyone that day.

I dont want to get addicted beacuse all of the health concerns and it would get expencive. But then again like it, its calming and feels nice.

I know my mum would go crazy if she knew i took one puff... My sister smokes but she has left home and my mum is kinda in denial that she smoke so she dosent give her shit for it.

Just wanna hear a general opinion from non smokers, and if there is any some smokers with their experiences and some general info e.g. age they started

P.S. Is this in the right place? i thought it would be classified as a drug.

Thanks
IF

basically what patch said. Everyone told me not to start, but of course I did, and no I can't stop, not that i want to. Do you honestly want to be spending £5 a day on ciggarettes? It's a waste.

I don't smoke and I don't plan on it. It's disgusting and there are so many health consequences that can come along with it in the long run. I've never even taken a slight interest in it. Plus, people tend to form an initial opinion of people when they see them smoking. It's like, when someone isn't the greatest person, smoking is always mentioned as a bad quality if he/she does it. I don't want to be labeled a "smoker".

I've heard alot about drugs, alcohol and smoking destroying social life, dreams, and happyness. There are the only things I have in my life, the things that keep me going every day and the things that keep me smiling more than anyone else in my entire school. And if one pill, one puff, one hit etc just could do that - I don't even want to take the risk.

im 13 and i smoke from time to time, with my friends, outside randomly etc; honestly, money drowns up pretty quickly when your buying a pack every 3 or 4 days, and most of my friends are 14/15/16 and they're pretty tall, here i am, a little sawn off crackie, trying to buy a pack of smokes, pretty hard. and don't fall for peer pressure. thats what did me in. but smoking does calm your nerves. (excuse my newfunese)

Well who brought this backlol
I plan on not smoking. I know a good number of people that do and I know they regret it becuase they get sick more often and one even had numonia. I think thats its annoying habit becuase everytime i pass someone i just start coughing uncontrolably and even get a headache sometimes. And there is that secondhand smoke thing. So I say dont start to preserve your body and the bodies of others.

I just tried my first cigarette a few days ago. It was a filtered camel. I went ona walk with my friend at 1 in the morning, and tried it. I didnt cough, die, pass out, throw up, etc. It wasnt GREAT, but it wasnt bad either. If a friend offered me one, id probably have another. (sorry if i have grammer mistakes, New to English:P)

Well obviously one cigarette isn't enough to cause all those things. It's a continued habit developed from an addiction that causes health problems. It's something that builds... you start with one and if you continue doing it, it'll grow into a bigger issue. Realize the risk you're putting your health in and see that cigarettes have nothing to offer to you and you're better off without them.

Yes we should of course do things if they don't immideatly do anything bad for us..

Then again smoking doesn't do shit thats good for you, only bad shit comes out of it.. Eventually your health declines and you waste money on that crap.

Yeah, all true but most of you non-smokers seem oblivious to the fact that many people enjoy smoking.

Non-smokers aren't oblivious. Speaking for me I know smokers do enjoy it. I am just aware of the risks involved and I believe people are better off without them and that the long term risks aren't worth the temporary enjoyment you get out of cigarettes.

Sure they can enjoy it, it becomes an addiction and your body requires it.. And once it gets it, it makes you enjoy it.. Making it more pleasurable.

I see your point and you're right. Most smokers know well what they're doing but do it anyway. Just like how a person drinks soda or McDonalds knowing it's unhealthy but they do it anyway because they want the enjoyment out of it.

I was doing some research on smoking 'cause a friend was starting to smoke and I was trying to discourage him.

There was a large study done in a British medical journal of teens 14-17. They asked them if they'd smoked ever, if so how often, did they plan to continue to smoke. The really shocking results were as follows.

A significant portion of the people in the study smoked once or twice per month. Nearly all of this group said they did not plan to become regular smokers. Yet when followed up 3 years later, almost 90% of those who smoked only once or twice per month had become regular daily smokers (half pack a day or more.) Of those, about 80% said they planned to quit within 6 months.

In a followup two years after that, of the same group (smokers who planned to quit in 6 months), 70% were still smoking, most had tried to quit at least once and failed.

Cigarettes have been shown to be more addictive than heroin. The tobacco companies have spent billions of dollars engineering their product to be as addictive as it's possible to make it, this has been proven. Trying to beat out the best minds in the industry who have engineered the product in order to ensure you become addicted is not likely to be a successful battle.

More than 95% of the people who smoke more than a few cigarettes will become addicted smokers. Nearly every single person who is an addicted smoker will tell you they never intended to become smokers.

If you start smoking, even very occasionally, you are very likely to become addicted. There are a tiny handful of people who have not, but statistics say you will probably not be one of them.

I would strongly suggest that anyone who is smoking "only while drinking" or "only occasionally" or "only when bumming cigs off of friends" should either quit now, or plan on becoming addicted. Those are really the only two choices.
