View Full Version : Birth Year requirement

I have a suggestion. It still seems like people over the max age you can join and under the minimum age you can join still manage to get in. I know they get banned very quickly, but can't there some way to prevent them from registering in the FIRST place?
require the birthday - the year is especially essential. I have this kind of thing on my forum, and I'm able to set the minimum and maximum age. so if someone born in 1998, for example, tries to register (and he/she is 12), there will be a message saying something like you don't meet the minimum age requirement. there should be the same on VT. (and of course you can still set whether or not others can see your age, just admins can see that)
This is only a suggestion. I know that people too young or old are banned quickly but maybe this will save time? I don't know

what is to stop them reducing their age though?

that sounds like a good idea Jess...but what keeps someone from just lying about their birthdate....what do you have that could guarantee against that?

mhmm that's the problem. I can't think of a way around that

I saw something interesting on a teen chat site..you had to take a picture of yourself with a note or somthing with your name, date, and something else and send it to the admin and they would "look" at it to see if you weren't some old man pedifile or something...don't think anything like that would work here though.

I remember giving my birthdate when joining...

Tried to do this when I ran a teen forum a while back. After a lot of effort, several mod requests etc. etc. I wasn't able to do it. Maybe an administrator here will have a trick, but I think it's unlikely - vBulletin just doesn't come with that functionality

I think she's asking for something that rejects accounts if the birthday you put in is too young.
I wanna see something that rejects if the bday is too OLD though.

Well I'm pretty sure the VT system automatically rejects new users who put their age as less than 13 anyway.

I think its better if you let them register their actual birthdate, so that you have more evidence to go on when you ban them. Its there on their account, rather than looking at posts

I meant too young AND too old too.

^ This basically. It'll be easier for people to lie if they just can't make an account to start with.

What if there was a way to do exactly this, but the account is still created, yet they can't log in? And it wouldn't say a thing about being too old or young, so they think it's either an issue on their end or the site's end without thinking it's because they're too old or young? They would just give up, and not continue attempting to create accounts until the birthdate is valid.

I actually said I was a month younger when I registered. I was afraid someone would know who I was because of my birthday, and everything I post up.

yeah, this is definitely common sense and it simply is a question of whether it's feasible to add. we'll look into it.
