It's a dumb question, but I'm wondering how much space does VT take up (like all the posts, pictures, whatever else is kept on the VT servers that is used on the site)
I'd imagine it would be quite a lot..

No. No more than a few gigabytes as above. MySQL databases literally contain the bare minimum of text in posts etc. If you think when you create a document on Notepad and you write something huge, it'll only be a couple of bytes big. This is a bit like that.
OP: why does it matter?

OP: why does it matter?Delete old stuff, lose some weight, so servers can upload faster, perhaps.

VT uses about 7 gigabytes in space total.

No, just a bit more, maybe like 20gb or more

Mainly what keeps the space down is the fact that avatars, album pictures, signature pictures, etc are resized and reduced significantly to the lowest possible level when uploaded to the server.

Ah yeah..
another question...
Are we hosted locally? like off an ex-staff computer? or a company host?

We are hosted on a server through a web hosting company.

Most people don't use their software providers for hosting. Outside companies are usually faster and more reliable. I may be wrong though in this case, but since Ant said "through a web hosting company," I highly doubt this is ran off of a service provided by vB.

I just did a trace, and it says privatesystems.net, which is web hosting

That's correct. vBulletin doesn't provide any hosting services. Just the forum software.

All the attachments would be compressed as they go onto the server. For alot of the photos people put in posts are mostly hosted by other servers.
