Suggest to me a FREE image editor/creator program I could download. Like GIMP, but I'm pretty sure GIMP can only work on Windows XP...I no longer have that. and Photoshop I think you can only have a free trial of it?

GIMP works on Windows 7 perfectly fine. If you look at doing Photoshop, make sure to look at tutorials to know what you're doing. :P

gimp was originally meant for linux(i think).

if you want something similar to mspaint, try KolourPaint. pretty good for quickly making images.

oh I see. I thought it wouldn't because I tried installing it on the laptop that used Vista, and it didn't work. When I had XP it worked perfectly fine.

If you can't afford Photoshop or Paintshop pro, then go with GIMP, no competition.

However, GIMP is hindered. If you aim to do pixel art I suggest Paint, but if you get passionate about pixel art, go with Graphics Gale.

Paint.net and Pixel Editor should be avoided. Mainstream products that, when I used them, were less than adequate in turn out.
Also, don't us Piknic or Photobucket like so many others do. You can tell you used the shitty editors every time.

Again though, if you can afford it or have other ways of obtaining it, Photoshop is definitely the way to go.

Question on GIMP.
At school I use Microsoft Fireworks, and it has pretty clearly defined layers. GIMP seems like it's *supposed* to have that, but I've never figured out how to make it work. Does it have editable layers or is it always going to be one flat bitmap?

I just installed it, but it's having the same problems when I had Windows Vista. When the GIMP startup came up it stopped responding. When I had Vista the same thing happened. When I had XP it did not.

Give it a long while after first startup.
It looks like it's frozen (So much so that Windows also think it's frozen), but it can take up to a few minutes for GIMP to find all of the things it needs for startup.
Every time after that though, it should start up fairly quickly.
