For some reason mine won't work with my girlfriend either so I'd be interested in getting an answer too.

Ignore MSNs assist feature. It's useless.
I suggest using Teamviewer. Simple and works well. All you have to do is exchange numbers and type in a password.

This is a perfect remote assist, unlike MSNs assist it actually works. :o

Teamviewer is nice, yeah, and I have used it a few times.
But I personally prefer the built-in 'Windows remote assist'. Reduces confusion for the less technical people that I have to sometimes help.
It's a really nice 'go here, paste this' feature of Windows.

Windows remote assist works decently as well. I just dislike the walking people through the beginning steps.

'Hit start'
'Type "msra", and hit enter'
'Paste this'
'Hit enter'
Is that really /that/ hard? :P
