A teen died last night in hospital after being brought back to life from an explosion in his shop class.

Grieving students flooded back to Mother Teresa High School Thursday night, united in grief, when word spread their classmate Eric Leighton had died in hospital from injuries in an explosion in shop class earlier in the day.

Shortly after 8 p.m., they began arriving and numbered close to 150 at one point.

Those who lived nearby walked, others drove, while some — like Akshay Sharma was brought by his father.

Sharma was in the same class as Leighton.

“We were pretty good friends,” he said.

The two spent first-period construction class together Thursday. The explosion happened in second period.

“He meant a lot to us. He was very nice to everybody, always helpful and he always cheered everyone up. He was a very valued part of Mother Teresa high school.”

Students who arrived at the school Thursday night set up a makeshift memorial which included a Senators jersey, notes and flowers. The students gathered around it, hugging and crying and trying to comfort each other.

Leighton, 18, was helping build a barbecue out of a 55-gallon barrel and as the students cut into the steel cylinder just before 11 a.m., it exploded.

Leighton was knocked unconscious and left covered with debris, bleeding profusely from his mouth.

He was found without vital signs but paramedics resuscitated him enroute to hospital.

He clung to life all day Thursday but died around 8:30 p.m.

Fellow student James Armstrong was in another part of the shop when the blast occurred.

“We were making barbecues out of these barrels and there was an explosion,” he said.

“I didn’t see anything because I was behind a truck working on the tires. All I hear is just this huge explosion coming from the other room.”

Besides Leighton, eight people were injured. Four students suffered minor injuries and, along with a 33-year-old teacher, were all taken to hospital with “concussive” type injuries but they are all expected to recover.

The other three were treated on scene.

There were 16 students and one teacher in the classroom at the time.

Student Lauren O’Grady was just outside the shop when the blast occurred.

“There was a spark that came off and it ignited a giant oil barrel,” she said pointing to a green steel barrel used as a garbage can. “The impact from the barrel was so big that our friend was knocked unconscious.”

Ottawa police said that fumes from oil residue in the barrel ignited, causing the explosion.

It’s not clear how a barrel containing dangerously explosive vapours ended up in the school in the first place and why students were handling it.

Catholic board spokeswoman Mardi deKemp said she was unaware whether students brought in the barrels, or if they were school supplies.

Mother Teresa was evacuated after the blast and students walked to nearby Longfields-Davidson high school, where they were met by school buses at 1:15 p.m. to take them home.

The school board called in crisis counsellors and incident specialists to attend to students’ needs.

^^ this.

we have word in dutch, "opleuken"(verb). not technically a word, but if you say it, everyone will know what you're talking about.
in almost every news programme there will be at least one happy/funny thing in the broadcast. and you have to, or people won't watch it.

the same should be done here.

Yeah, let's shield ourselves from the true nature of the world by posting happy shit! No, nobody should ever see anything depressing, that's just dangerous and unnecessary!

The amount of shit the media puts out to keep the population happy and away from all the disappointing news is what disgusts me, not the lack of it. The world isn't happy. The news, which is what tells you about the world, shouldn't be either. I'm not saying there should never be an uplifting news story, but it's absurd and deluded to suggest we should post happy stories over sad ones because the news is "too depressing".

I'm sorry that the real world isn't enough to meet your absurd happiness standards.

I have a mental disorder, so what? It's in the news because it happened. Nothing we can do about that. Someone thought it was important enough to share. I'm fully against censorship of any kind. I think it was kind if stupid to say that. A) This isn't the psych ward so lets not single people out for no reason and b) shielding people doesn't help them get better. It was meant to be a news story not a ROTW debate.

I found the article sad but interesting. Plus it's Canadian so it hit close to home.

We're not in the Ministry of Truth, nor in the Psych Ward. It isn't wrong to post events, no matter how cruel, incredulous or violent they are, because this is the news forum.

Probably 20% of the people on this forum have depression, you're saying we should keep posting stories about how their friends died to make them happy? Good logic there.

If it was really a problem, don't you think someone would've brought it up before in VT's 7 years of existence?

Hiding from the world and pretending things don't exist only worsens the depression when they're forced back into the world they are being sheltered from. We're not children. If someone doesn't want to read depressing news, they will just go to a different thread. I don't see why this is a debate if no one has complained about it depressing them. I've been depressed all my life and news is just news.

Sometimes, some news station will amplify the sad and depression shit 10 times over. Now, I'm not saying we should delude ourselves into thinking that the world is a happy place. But it shouldn't be made to be seen as a hellhole either.

Only 20%? So out of the current 5,091 members we have, only 1018 deal with depression? If that's the case, then VT's out of business.
Posting stories about how their friends died? They would've already known about it before reading the thread.

This is the News forum, not the Depression forum. This story is news.

Of course not. The news should be honest, not amplified. I don't see any of that going on here on VT. We have a good mix of happy and sad stories; the status quo is fine.
