Something small (Usually cheaper tax and stuff) with a small engine (Cheaper to run). Anything under a 2L. 1.2, 1.4, 1.6 are all good. If you're going for second hand look at the mileage, try to find something that has under 100,000 miles on the clock. I'm not sure if the same applies to you aussies as it does in England though. My first car was/is a 1.4 Ford Focus with not even 60,000 on the clock.

Not bad for a first car. My Brother (half) had one in the UK. Its was a diesel. Yeah, I'm looking at small cars atm but don't know which ones are reliable. And my dad told me something about avoiding cars around the 100,000 km mark because they usually need their "Cam Belt" changing or something along those lines. Anyway, thanks for the advice :)

Well from a practicality standpoint you cant go wrong with a Toyota. Any 4 cyl Toyota Camry, Corolla, Yaris, Echo, Paseo, or tundra will do what you need it to do! They will never break down and get great gas mileage. But unfortunantly driving these cars will be the biggest snooze fest in the world! If your anything like me you will shoot yourself before you get to where your going lol. So for a little driving fun, a lower mileage inline 6 BMW 3 Series (mid 90s) is the way to go! lol

I personally think that any small car is suitable. Cheap to run and more enviromentally friendly (plus the insurance isnt as much) :)

Can't go wrong with an older Toyota or Honda. Very reliable cars, and can be found pretty cheap. Corollas, Camrys, Civics, Accords, anything like that. Just a tip though, make sure you or someone with you takes the car for a good test drive before you buy it.

I want a Vauxhall Astra 3 door in white or black!
However, I can't see it happening due to insurance being so expensive!

I would say a truck or suv because if you get in an accident it's more safe + you can give your friends rides or carry stuff in the back

Any japanese car with under 200k miles will do you perfectly fine. 4 cylinder. Make sure the TIMING belt has been replaced already (600 USD repair usually)

I agree with all the above. I love my Crown Vic. But since he's in Australia, I doubt you can find one. But if I lived there, I would totally get my hands on a Ford Falcon XR6 Turbo. I wish Ford would import this to America.

Also try and find a car with service records. Cars with service records have proof they were cared for properly.

Like Aaron said, something small and cheap to insure.
Don't go and buy a big fucking muscle car for your first. You will have no idea how to handle that much power and will end up being all cocky with the speeds you can reach.
Get something small like a 1.4 Ford Fiesta. Cheap to buy, cheap to insure, cheap to run and you're not going to go and kill yourself with speed and power you're not used to.

I'm in America but you can find like a 2004 1.8L turbo Audi A4 with <100K miles for about 7000 USD. That or a volkswagen jetta are two good first cars.

As much as I love those cars, they'll cost an arm and a leg in repairs. I know; we've had 4 VWs in the last 10 years.

VW Jetta TDI diesel! Great on fuel mileage and last a long time. They are usually fairly easy to come by for a good price here in the states but idk bout over in Australia.

Depends on how much you have to blow. Anything really from Honda or Toyota is gonna be a golden ticket. Not real fun to drive, but it'll last until hell freezes over. Just check them for rust and molestation.

I'd say get a Chevy Cavalier. It has good gas millage and it's small. If you get the coup, it's really small. Or, if you get the sedan, it's also roomy, but has good millage on it as well..
96 Cavalier coup:

And if you have a bit of cash, you can customize it too!

And here's a Cavalier Sedan

Well the most teen friendly car is the Kia Soul. Resonable price, not super fast, and great gas mileage.

It all depends on your price range, personal preference, environment, etc. Really, any car you like. Don't take a ton of suggestions, if you see something you like that's cheap with low miles, buy it. My first (and current) car was/is a '96 Camaro RS with 55,000 miles on it. Only got a 3.8l V6 under the hood, but it's still pretty quick, gets good MPG, and saves me a ton on insurance :).
