okay my dad went to install Windows 7 on my laptop (one that uses XP) and it was unsuccessful.

I remember last year he tried to change it to Windows Vista (that time I was NOT using it) but that failed too.

Is there any explanation as to why? is it because it doesn't meet system requirements for Windows 7?

He's going to try again tonight but I have a bad feeling it's still not going to work :/

He's a computer expert but I don't really know if he knows why. He wasn't able to explain why for the failed installation of Vista

Is he installing it from the disc or the BIOS?

he doesnt sound like a 'computer expert' from what you have said so far...

What is the model of the laptop and what are the specifications on it?

What's going wrong, exactly? How is it failing?

I'll check

I don't know. I went to check it and it said "Installation failed. Changes are being undone." It didn't specify why, if it did, I probably missed it. it must be because that laptop didn't meet system requirements. I'll go check

my dad's going to try again, maybe we'll then know why, but for now, I'll have to check the model and all that

Hmm, if he works with them a simple installation of windows shouldent be a problem.

Is it a genuine copy?

Alright, I'll be waiting. Also I've had problems with Win vista/7 installs hitting a bad block of memory, then subsequently failing. A scratched disc can also cause problems.
Try running Memtest86+ on your laptop. If Memtest comes up with errors try one stick of ram instead of two, or switch out a stick of ram. Also try a fresh disc by downloading the same version retail ISO and burning it to a new disc.

Was going to suggest this.
Can't tell you how many failed Windows installs I've had because of a bad burn.

When you burn the fresh disc, burn it at the slowest speed, and have it verify that all data was written correctly.

If a fresh disc doesn't work, you can always extract the contents of the .iso and throw it on a flash drive, and tell you laptop to boot from the flash drive, and install from there.

i suspect system requirements.
why?

a simple fact: windows is bloatware.
many will disagree, however, this (http:/en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism_of_Microsoft_Windows#Minimum_hardware_requirements) should dispell some controversy.

i keep telling people: use linux. but you don't have to ;)
that's okay.

How?
All it says is 'Some think Windows is bloatware'.
It doesn't go on to explain WHY it's bloatware, who thinks it bloatware, or if it even is bloatware.

Also, the 'sources' provided on that page are a joke. Seriously.
Not one of them reports it's even remotely bloatware.

i keep telling people: use linux. but you don't have to ;)
that's okay.

Lol.
Linux.

Linux is fun for us 'enthusiasts', that is, people who have an undying passion for computers.
Linux is a nightmare for the average user. It's not very 'user friendly' at all.
There IS a reason Linux isn't widely used in the consumer PC market, and Windows is. ;)

Also, just noticed this in the first post:
Is there any explanation as to why? is it because it doesn't meet system requirements for Windows 7?
Does it meet the requirements? (1Ghz processor, 1GB RAM (Can be installed on 512MB though), DirectX9 compatible video card, 6GB of free disk space (3-4GB required for Windows itself, depending on the version you're installing))
If not, why even try to install it?

Matrix. I love linux. I absolutely love it. I would NOT suggest it for an average user. The most I would suggest is Ubuntu. That would even be a stretch.

okay here's the information.....reading this from this sticker thing that has all sorts of info

AMD Turion 64 x2 Mobile Technology TL50 (1.6 GHz, 512 KB L2 cache)
15.4 WXGA wide CrystalBrite TFT LCD
ATI Radeon Xpress 1100
120GBB PATA HDD
DVD-Super Multi double layer
1GB DDR2
802.11b/g wireless LAN

The brand is Acer.

My dad's only changing it to Windows 7 because then I can use that laptop instead of borrowing my mom's all the time. In another thread I mentioned that my laptop was having problems, like it has a virus or whatever. My dad said it was best to change it from XP to Windows 7

I'll have to check the disk space, I think it might be because my laptop doesn't have DirectX9 compatible video card. but the rest, I think it meets..

Wondering. Is your father installing a 64 bit or 32 bit version of windows 7?

I don't know about that. I'll have to ask him.

Remember, it also failed to change to Vista, though I don't know if that's relevant anyways :P

Run Memtest86+
If he's trying 64 bit the recommended is 2gb ram.

I just like to point out, if a something does not meet the requirements it does prevent installation. Secondly, no one has picked up on this. Both Vista and 7 have "Upgrade" versions, make sure you're not using an upgrade disc because these can't install on a clean HDD. I honestly don't think your dad is an expert if he can't solve this out, installations is one off the many simple things to do with computers.

thats not true linux is fantantastic i was sceptical about putting on my laptop but it works very good the laptop works allot better than when it had windows on it the only problem is that there arent alot of programs that designed for linux but there are lots of linux alternatives : )
