Worth The Risk?

I've liked this guy for about six months now, but he has no idea I like him. One of his closer friends let slip that he might be Gay, but it's hazy. We only have two weeks left of school together, then we'll probably never see eachother again, apart from when we go to our exams. I really like him a lot, and have contemplated writing letters to him, talking to him about it online, or even to his face, and (from what I've heard) he's all I ever talk about.
What I'm asking is:
-Should I tell him I like him?
-How should I approach him (Writing a letter, talking face to face, etc.)?
-I feel that only bad could come from this, by loosing a good friend. Do you think the possible 'pros' outway the possible 'cons'?

What I'd say is "Alright, I'm taking a leap here, I don't know about you, but I really like you. Would you like to go on a date sometime?"
Hopefully he's gay and it works out :)
If he's not, just you liking him shouldn't stop a friendship :)
