I was pretty nervous the first time, mainly about how it would taste and feel and stuff. I'm the same way, I did try once because I didn't find licking the vagina gross, but during it I accidentally licked her anus and that turned me off. I think for girls it would be easier to suck a cock because the anus isn't even close to the cock.

I don't see how the pubic hair makes you think it's gross, it's only hair, I would think licking the anus where poop comes from would be more of a turn off. My gf does trim her pubes, but even if she didn't that's not the gross part for me, I'm new to oral sex and female anatomy.
