Ive had one once before and had to have it cut out. I think I have another one and I dont want to have another novacane shot in my big toe. Any tips on how to avoid them?

You can't avoid them. You just need surgery again.

Avoiding them is possible, i know, as i used to have about 2 a year. when you cut the nail, cut it strait, and make sure you can see the corners of the nail, as this is what ingrows. this works for me, and should work for you

I had one of those before, and it doesn't always require surgery, I don't exactly remember what I did, but I soaked my toe, and squeezed it a little, it hurt, but not a lot, and eventually the pus was gone and my toe was healed. I didn't need surgery, and my mom is a nurse, so I know for a fact I had an ingrown toenail. As to avoiding them, the thing about cutting them straight is true, and thats your best bet. Also, don't let them grow to long. :)
