Any kind of Smartphone requires a Dataplan unless you want to buy it full price, and then activate it. Check Amazon and eBay for sales on used ones.
I have a Blackberry 8120, old one from 2007, but I love it and I'm upgrading next month to most likely the Black Berry Curve 3G.

Well, like I said in our thread; Blackberry isn't the best phone if you're looking for a fun app phone. BB has AppWorld, but it's no where as big as Android Market && Apple Apps, though it still does has over 2000games. If a lack in apps compared to Android and Apple is fine with you, yes that is a good plan. As with any smartphone, if you're somewhere you get Wifi, you can use the Wifi instead of using your Data.

Blackberry Messenger, only requires an Email plan, but it's also for talking to others with Blackberrys(berries?). As for as AIM, YahooIM, WLM, you need a Dataplan. If I recall WindowsLiveMessenger doesn't work on Blackberry due to a contract thingy between the two(?), may be wrong there.

As I said, I may be wrong about that. But with only WiFi they messengers will not work.

Windows Live Messenger (MSN Messenger (Y!M)) does work on Blackberry: http://us.blackberry.com/smartphones/features/im/wlm.jsp
Also, so long as you're connected to the wifi network, it should pull all data through the wifi connection, not your data plan. So I don't think you'll *need* a data plan.
Not entirely sure on that though.

None of the messengers work on my phone, because I use Wifi and have no Data.
