The Sacramento radio show behind a water drinking competition (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/01/15/wii_death/) which saw one of the contestants die from apparent water intoxication has been taken off air indefinitely.
"The Morning Rave" on local station KDND 107.9 "The End" held its "Hold your wee for a Wii" contest to win a videogames console on Friday. Runner-up and mother of three Jennifer Strange, 28, was found dead at her home around five hours later. The coroner said preliminary results showed apparent water intoxication.

After competing, Strange rang her employers to tell them she would not be coming into work. The Sacramento Bee reports fellow contestant Elidia Campos said: "She looked pale, her eyes were super watery, and everyone was really nauseous."
Another competitor, Victoria Myers criticised the station. She said: "They were not concerned about our health or our risk."
Station general manager John Geary said: "The circumstances regarding this matter are being examined as thoroughly as possible. We are doing everything we can to deal with this difficult situation in a manner that is both respectful and responsible. In the interim, the Morning Rave is off the air indefinitely."
Strange drank 224 ounces (6.62 litres) of bottled water. Drinking more water than the kidneys can handle reduces the concentration of solutes in the blood, so water swells cells by osmosis and causes potentially lethal damage. ®

This is all over the news. Do u guys think they should have been fired, even though the contestants sign papers making the radio station free of any fault?

Well she did willingly enter the contest, the thing that perplexes me is how could you not notice this "water intoxication" coming on. I don't think it is like a poison were it suddenly hits you, anyway here is some more news on the subject.

"Family sues Calif. radio station after woman dies

SACRAMENTO, California (Reuters) - The family of a California woman who died after participating in a radio station's water-drinking contest will sue the station, their lawyer said on Thursday.
Jennifer Strange, 28, a mother of three, died from suspected water intoxication after taking part in Friday's competition, "Hold your wee for a Wii." About 20 people tried to out-drink each other without going to the toilet to win a Nintendo Wii game console.
Sacramento station KDND-FM responded by firing 10 staffers, including several DJs. The DJs had joked about people dying from water intoxication and teasing Strange about her enlarged stomach.
"The station knew this was a dangerous and potentially deadly stunt, but flippantly dismissed the dangers," lawyer Roger Dreyer said in a statement. "Hearing the tape, it's very clear they knew of the dangers and could foresee that this could lead to Jennifer's death."
The station could not be reached for comment because its phone number was continuously engaged on Thursday evening.
Police are also investigating the death for possible criminal charges.
Water intoxication can prove deadly and cause irregular heartbeat, fluid in the lungs and swelling of the brain."

Do you think they have a valid reason for suing, Were dose personal responsibly take over?

well its a known fact that over hydration can be deadly so i think it was a stupid contest to begin with.

I agree with you serial-thrilla.

If they signed waivers, too bad for the family. What's the point of a waiver if it doesn't give them no fault? You can't sign something to accept the risk then go back on it. Stand by what you signed.

Well i have never heard of 'water intoxication' so this was a suprise me to. But the radio hosts probably had no knowledge of this either, can should not be blamed.

They obviously had to know something if they felt the need to have waivers.

She didnt kno this wuld kill her, -Breakdown25-. She probably went into the competition to win the Wii for her kids. And do you think her kids can simply " go on with their lives"? They lost their mother. She didnt kno this competition would kill her, and she trusted the people at teh radio station knew what they were doing when they did this.

Those people at the radio station should have known what they were doing when they decided to subject people into such a competition. There was obviously no research done at all before they made up this contest.

Well when you sign a waiver you should research what you're about to do to see if anything is harmful.

Well when you sign a waiver you should research what you're about to do to see if anything is harmful.

When people enter contests, they always sign waivers in case of mishaps. IN CASE. Why in case? Because they presume the contest people kno what they're doing and that it is safe. Waivers are just routine things people make people sign in case of mishaps, like "oh I want to sue teh contest people cuz they wouldnt let me pee".

People can sue anyone for anything, thats why in contests, they are made to sign waivers. But other than that, people will trust what they are getting into has safe risks.

Go to Google and type is excessive water drinking. The fourth reply explains all about it. It was that easy to do research or you could call your doctor. You are responsible to ensure what you are doing is safe once you sign the waiver. The family will have to stand by her decision. Be careful what you sign.

That's a very good point. Anything in too big a quantity can be dangerous, I would of thought this is common knowledge. I personally feel that the women was stupid, no one with any intelligence would do this for a bloody Wii.

Your blood vessels explode like overfilled balloons when you drink too much water, camels have specially shaped blood vessels and that is why they can drink such enormous amounts of water.

Last time that fucking huge flood, and now this :(

Seriously though, my heart really goes out to a mother of 3 dying for a stupid ass reason like this.
