View Full Version : Christianity, Porn and Masturbation??? Sorry for length of post.

Hi,

I'm new to these forums and discovered them while searching for a similar title. Not sure if this is the correct place to be posting this? I was wondering whether any christians (if any are on this site) have any advice for my predicament. I'm currrently 16 and have seen more then my share of porn including multiple different forms. Masturbation is another thing that either leads or is then an activity that follows on from porn.

The Bible has no reference directly to masturbation to which I know of. Many cases where they try to prove it a sin are a twist on words or reading to much into a verse where it obviously doesn't say what they interpret it to meaning. I don't myself beleive masturbation is a sin but porn is the part I'm very confused about.

My family has different sides to it that I've heard. My step-dad who hasn't been a christian all his life said thats normal and its fine. My mum on the other hand is against it but never goes into much detail but she always says humans sin but we are forgiven we aren't perfect. Then a school that I was going to which was christian based (not catholic though) in there youth group mentioned things about it being a straight out sin and avoiding it no matter what.

I'm always horny when home and just can't help myself, it doesn't get in the way of anything but still wanted to here peoples opinions. I'm just confused on the whole matter I've tried stopping a couple times altogether but then not long after going back to old habits. I also believe maybe I masturbate far too much but I just need that release.

Anyway thanks for any replies J.T.W.

Genesis 38:9
Genesis 38:10

It's a "sin" in christianity. From this passage comes the saying "It is better to cast your seed in the belly of a whore than to spill it on the ground."
Other than that you're fine. (No I'm not christian.)

it isn't a sin. I don't think it is written in the bible that having a little fun is a sin and you will go to hell.

It is perfectly normal, and almost 70-80% of America does it. Don't worry about it. :)

Did you know it's a sin to wear shoes? And it's a sin to be born, yet we can't help being born. Many many MANY things are sins in this world, it's not worth worrying about :)

I can see why people might see porn as immoral because some find it degrading to women(and the very few men who partake). And yeah, masturbation is a sin, not that I agree with the Bible, but it is origionally a sin.

I say origionally, because masturbating has been proven to have many health benefits, and no downsides, so why not do it? People once said that it drives a person crazy but that's not true. It relieves stress and ups your self-esteem and loads of things. So even though the Bible might have depicted it as a terrible sin the taboo has since been lifted. It's acceptable nowadays. And alot of people do it. I'd look up facts and figures for you, but I'm too lazy :) I was in a doctors clinic a few weeks back and saw a leaflet that said "An orgasm a day is ok", it was about masturbating. So don't worry, if it really is a sin, God will make exceptions because it's good for you and so common :D

Sins are fiction. Fap, my friend, FAP!

If God were real, he'd do it, too,

Hmm some interesting points (although some I must laugh at(no offence)). The one stating the Genesis verse is kind of mute for the fact its the old testament and things have changed dramatically from that.

The exceptions part is a good point because so many things we do are sins anyway. Although some other comments there are a bit ridiculous and seem misinterpreted.

I'm not sure really its just not a widely talked about thing in christian social groups. And the Bible has so many intrepretations you can get the complete opposite out of a verse compared to another person.

Anyway thanks all. Anymore comments and responses are appreciated.

Aussie, you asked if it was a sin. I gave you the part that said it was a sin. :) The old testament is still part of the bible.

I just gave you the part saying it was a sin. I'm not christian. I was raised Roman Catholic, all we read was the old testament.

If God were real, he'd do it, too,

Blasphemy! Heresy! You, you, You Smelly Old Heathen! By the Gods, I shalt call a Crusade! And by the decree written by the Pope himself, I am permitted to scrub your mouth with the harshest cleaning materials available to man, as punishment for your Apostasy!

Hmm odd that I've had many Catholic people tell me they only believe the Old Testament is stories and the New Testament is what they believe is true. See I find I prefer seeing the New Testament mentioning something such as masturbation or whatever because the New Testament has like Revision 1 its updated basically and is correct if you believe Jesus was the saviour etc etc.

I just found this book I forgot was in the house and basically masturbation isn't a sin its just something that if you think of people in the wrong way while doing so or watch pornography then it is. Which the pornography part is like -.- damn. Although noticed I can very easily avoid it if I dare choose or minimize the amount I view it in a day etc.

Thankfully we have a merciful God I believe I will still view it more then necessary but I'm more then sure it will fade out when or if I bother with getting a girlfriend and when I'm older (especially when I'm older).

i dont know if its a sin in christianity but masturbation has some very nagative effects.here is a list:
1) Loss of concentration and cannot think properly and focus.
2) Most of the times body becomes inactive but sometimes feeling of more vigorous and energetic.
3) Dark circles below eyes.
4) Always wants to be alone. Person becomes very reserved.
5) Uninterested to take parts in social gatherings.
6) Dislike everything such as music, arts, sports social events
7) Cannot think of the future and career properly.
8) Body growing to huge like of weight lifters and bodybuilders.
9) Face loses its charm and spark.
10) Body becomes thin (not exactly thin because of larger jaws face looks skeleton).
why doctors say it is not harmful to masturbate?coz They themselves don’t masturbate so they actually don’t know anything about good or bad effects of masturbation. Without knowledge they tell masturbation is harmless and so people believing them again regularly masturbate instead of quitting it.

^^ LOL no offence but some of those are thing that go around as jokes. Then others I'm not sure where you sourced this info from but I know for a fact is incorrect and would only happen if you were totally addicted. Some of the other things I do just because of who I am.

"4) Always wants to be alone. Person becomes very reserved.
5) Uninterested to take parts in social gatherings."

Those I do just because of who I am not because of anything else. I'm not a huge fan of people at times. At one point I would've been happy if no one but myself existed, doesn't help if the people you know don't match your intelligence level or maturity level...

Those are urban myths :/ People used to think this and it's why it was so frowned upon. But people who are qualified in the field of science have found out that it releases very positive chemicals in the body, whereas everything you listed has absolutely no evidence to support it. I have heard these before and they've been proven wrong. Doctors don't get their knowledge from their own lives, they get it from scientific evidence.

You also can't jus presume that doctors don't masturbate. Most of the population does, so why wouldn't they?
You also mentioned alot of symptoms of depression there such as not wanting to go out etc. Seratonin is released when a person pleasures themselves, which actually elevates the mood. Also, you said that the body becomes huge, and then you said it becomes thin, it cannot be both at the same time. And if the body became completely inactive, you'd be dead. It's a well known fact that these are only stories that you presented here.
So people can side with scientific evidence, or rumours that stems from christian beliefs.

I'm a Christian. Southern Baptist. Masturbation being a sin: your right, tree really aren't any direct references in the Bible to it. Therefore, I guess it isn't a sin. Porn: gay, straight any kind. Of course, porn didn't exist in Bible times, but God says we should save sex for marriage and I think porn counts as that. If you feel the urge to look at porn, just pray about it. That's just Satan tempting you. When you fall into his temptation, he can pull you farther and farther away from God. Skype me if you wanna talk.

Its a sin because its lust and temptation. God wanted us to go forth and have kids but not in a lustful way. That's why Catholics wait till they are married to have kids because its just a long story behind that. Personally I look at it but i know it's wrong but its hard to quit sometimes cause i mean imma guy but yeah its lust and not love and lust is one of the 7 deadly sins so yeah. And by the way I'm a nondenominational Christian and go to church every week.

Hmm someone who seems to have the same ideas/beliefs I have on that subject. I at one point thought hmm maybe its not so you ahve that release so you stop thinking that way. And anyway if you don't then you have a wet dream which is perverted and you ahve no control over it at all. So no matter what you either masturbate or have a dream where you orgasm but also think pervertedly. The porn I know basically is a sin but its probably the main thing I intentionally do that is a sin. Guess no one is perfect and thats my one downfall for now even though recently since this thread I've almost stop altogether.

Btw Andrewhcook you got msn, skype is not really my thing...? Well I just don't use it or have it...

I go to a christian school and am a roman catholic. According to the school's Christian Living Education book, it is a sin. I don't remember much of it but, it falls under the same category of sin in which drinking alcohol and gambling falls under. It's not a great sin but it is a sin.
I watch porn and masterbate. And I had to confess it a couple of times to the priest. (yes, that does sound weird.)

in my opinion though, (and in science's opinion), It's completely healthy as long as you don't do it too often and aren't addicted to it.

I disagree for the fact all sins are the same no one is greater then the other which is pretty terrifying when your lie is as terrible as commiting murder basically. If the 'Christian Living Education book' didn't have a direct quote or reference to a verse in the Biblie, I no offence believe it is another thing someone has said without any evidence to back themselves up. Or like what occured in the middle ages another one of the Catholics tricks where they changed slightly what verses said or said to people they had to pay the church to get into heaven etc.

Gambling as well from what I remember is another one of those sins that as well doesn't have a verse directly relating or talking about it specifically that doesn't need interpretation to say it is a sin.

That's talking about pulling out.

Also OP, technically looking at porn is a sin since it's a lustful act. But you shouldn't care. It's natural to feel aroused, and if you don't do it yourself, your body will do it for you. Don't look too much into things.

Yeah I know about porn being a sin. And yeah always thought that even if I don't look at porn well then I have a 'wet dream' which is of a perverted nature and bam I'm sinning with no control over it at all -.-. And I will check out chicks and imagine things that would be consider a sin as well...

Yes I saw the Genesis verse something about that verse hmm. Will need to read the chaptor involving that verses because I'm sure there is a reason people don't use that as there evidence behind why masturbation is a sin. Probably got something to do with it not being in the New Testament. Yes I know its still in the Bible but a lot of Christians prefer to refer to the New Testament becaues as I believe I said earlier it is like Update 1 or Revision 1. So yeah and the New Testament being more with the times and the fact the Old Testament then was refering mainly to make sure the Jews/Israelites had good hygiene and sanitation.

I am a christian and I have a similar. Porn and Masturbation are both sin because it cause you to lust after someone and sex with is not how god intended for sex to happen. It is hard trying to conquer sin but with prayer, trust, and a understanding friend you will overcome. Stay strong and don't let anyone lead you astray from your faith!! Hope this helped.

No temptation has overtaken you that is unusual for human beings. But God is faithful, and he will not allow you to be tempted beyond your strength. Instead, along with the temptation he will also provide a way out, so that you may be able to endure it.

i quoted this post because it is true. i think masturbating is ok but watching porn aint. id say it makes you ignore the real issues in life and it can also lead to other bad things but we all no what a sin is and what isnt even if its not mentioned in any books. most people know right from wrong and they choose where to go from there. anyone agree

Don't try to leave good things.

In other words, masturbate whenever you want to. It's normal, and almost everybody on this earth has done it at least once. It's beneficial in many ways too! it realieves stress, and helps to prevent prostate cancer.

Porn on the other hand, as it might be a sin, god will forgive it. God forgives all that are right. Of course it might be an earge to watch it, then watch it. Gay straight or bi, god made you, and new before hand that you would have these earges. They are completely normal.

I took a Social Justice class and we talked about this. The part that is a 'sin' is defiling another persons body while watching porn. (If the porn thing bothers you just use your imagination! But I know religion and things like this make me want to rip my own hair out!) I believe that is why it is wrong in Christianity. I don't think masturbation is wrong in the religion though...since humans are programmed to be 'sexual beings'.

Hope that helps somewhat :)

Hey man, Welcome to VT.
Here is what i'm gonna tell you:
I'm not Christian, I'm Jewish, i believe in G-d and in "our" bible...
And it's forbidden to masturbate, according to what the religious people say..
Now i had some problems about it, because i was masturbating, and having really bad feeling afterwards..
And then, after some thinking, i understood, that there are more important things to obey - like - helping people in need, being nice and helpful, not hurting people in any way, and so on.
And masturbation - how is that bad ? I mean - if you don't masturbate - the cum will get out by itself in a wet dream, while the whole "forbidden" thing - is to "spend" the cum without a purpose...
I mean - G-d created us that way, that it will get out any way..
So... Why is it forbidden ? I think that it's just the thinking of the person(s) who wrote that rule in the bible...
Anyway - You better pay attention on more important things, like - being helpful, not rude, listening to parents and stuff like that, rather than not masturbating..
And - Keep in mind - That's only my opinion.

Good luck ! :)
