"What the hell?" I say. "Wrong people? She was just a lonely little girl! What's your problem???" The cold expression did not change on the boy's face. "Look...like I said, don't hang around the wrong people." He says again. "And I said, WHAT'S THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN???" I say in his face now. He takes a step back. "Look, I shouldn't be here." He says, starting to walk away. I sigh. "Look, I'm sorry, I don't want to make any enemies here, but I just can't stand bullies. Come back...please?" I ask. He turns around slowly. "You want me...to come...back?" He asks. "Yes." I say. "Come with me to my Aunt's house and have some lemonade. I have nobody to hang out with." I say. He nods. "Okay, fine." He says. "Where does she live? I'm wearing dress shoes so I can't walk far." I point to the house. "Just right there." I say. He points to the house next to it. "That one?" He asks. I shake my head. "No. That one." I say, pointing to my Aunt's house. I take his hand and guide him torwards it. "No." he says suddenly. "Please. I don't want to be alone." I say. He nods, and I lead him torwards the house. He lingers on the doorstep. "Come on!" I say impatiently. "My aunt's not gonna bite." He gulps at my words, and I roll my eyes. He comes in behind me, and we kick off our shoes. The house is quiet. Theres a note on the fridge.
Kara- Out to get groceries. Be back in an hour. ~Aunt Basila
I read the note, then go back to the boy. "What's your name?" I ask him. His eye twitches like he's nervous. "Uhm...Kevin." He says. "I'm Karmabella. Call me Kara." I say, nodding to him. "Wanna explore the house with me? I got here this morning, because my parents are on a research trip in Africa." I say. He nods. "Sure. It's just...nevermind." He says quickly. "What?" I ask. "Well..." He says, moving his weight to the other foot nervously. "I thought...that...this house...that nobody lived in it. There was a fire in 19 something...and nobody had occupied it since then. Well...I guess that your aunt...is new?" He says. I shake my head. "No...she's been here a longgg time. She grew up in this house with my mom and granny." I say. "Oh." He says. Then I guide him upstairs. I decide not to tell him about the little notecard until later. He stumbles on about maybe a different house...so and so on, as we walk up the winding stone steps. "It's fine." I say. First I walk to the laundry room and pull Boo-Boo bear out of the dryer. I hug his snuggly clean warmness to my chest, and smile. "It was my mom's old comfort toy." I say. He nods. "Hey, Kara?" I smile. He must have looked at the refridgerator note. I nod. "Wanna go to the attic? If this house is really old...from the 1900's, then maybe there's an attic walkway. They had those back then, where you could get to the next house or apartment by walking in the attic woodwork. There's normally a little door." He says. My mouth drops open. A little door...where had I heard that before? The closet! The closet in my ATTIC room! "I know where it is! But my aunt locked it. She said not to go in." I say. "They keep the keys above a doorway." He says. We walk to the front door, and sure enough, there it is. He reaches up, being taller than me, and pulls the little iron key down. He wipes heavy dust off of it. We go to the kitchen to rinse the key off. When it is clean, we see the key is a small heart shape. Vines circle the heart, and it is a deformed shape, like the heart is being squeezed by the vines. We take the key and go to my room in the attic. I show him where the door is behind a heavy curtain, and he fits it into the lock. Suddenly I hear a door slam downstairs. "She's home!" I whisper fiercely. He hands me the key, and I tuck it into my bra. "I'll see you later." He says, opening the window. I'm confused. He slips out, and I see him drop to the ground and take off down the road, waving. I turn around, and smooth the curtain into place. I go out of my room, closing the door quietly behind me, and I meet Aunt Basila in the kitchen. Her arms are overflowing with grocery bags. "Um...hi Aunt Basila." I say, nervously. Her black eyes seem to glow. "Help me with these." She says, struggling. I pick up the bags, and unload food into the fridge. "So, are you going to be here all week?" I ask. She shakes her head. "No. I will be gone during the afternoon every day. I have work to do." She says. I am secretly happy, knowing I will get a chance to try the key out with Kevin. "Oh...ok." I say. "So...what's for dinner?" I ask. She nods torwards the open containers on the counter. "I got Chinese. You can eat, I will be in the study." She says icily. "Uhm...ok." I say, shuddering at her tone. How am I going to survive tonight?
