Whenever I try, I can't. I lay there for about 40 minutes until I get up and do something, and if I do fall asleep, it's only for 10-20 minutes.
What's happening?

Im having the exact same problem, I get around 45 minutes of sleep a night. The answer i most commonly get is you have too much stress and too much on your mind. So maybe if you can explain a little bit about your life like if you're having a lot of stress or something along those lines it would help.

I get in stressful situations a lot, but I never feel stressed about anything. My school keeps hounding me lately due to absences, but thats all I can think of.

May just have a natural sleeping disorder, they are really common - I have 2 mates with them. The best thing I could recommend is to see a sleep therapist, and they do all types of test to figure out how to help. They are really worth a try.

There are a whole list of tips I could post, but if you google them, they are easy to find.

Contact me if you need anything :)

I agree with DS. You may hjave too much stress or something on your mind. I suggest going to a doctor and seeing what type of sleep medicine you could take to help you sleep better. It helped me.

(I take Melatonin, but don't try ANY medication until you get it perscribed to YOU) :)

Yes, I too think you may have a lot of stuff on your mind.
Normally, when I can't sleep, I either workout (some sit-ups and push-ups); listen to music, especially calm songs, which was what I did last night, actually; or masturbate, it normally helps you relieve some stress and may help you sleep better. Sometimes I do all three! :P
If neither of the above work then you should really consult a doctor to see what's happening.

Drink warm milk, turn off all lights and noises, keep your phone on vibrate, write a to-do list for the next day,

I'm scheduled to go to the doctor on Thursday for my sleeping problem so I will know officially what my problems is and maybe get something prescribed. Right now I would suggest talking to your parents and possibly seeing a doctor.

Try not to drink anything with caffeine up to five hours before you go to bed, at least three hours.

Drink some milk before you go to bed. Turn off the television or music, put on some low white noise (a fan works well), and chill out. It's not uncommon to wait 30 minutes to an hour in pensive mood to go to sleep.

You can also try reading something really dense. I recommend Heart of Darkness, Joseph Conrad
