Yes, you wear short shorts- just like you would during track.
Some guys go bare do to the fact that the shorts are usually closed-bottom as to avoid any "unfortunate slips;" however, I still prefer to wear compression shorts underneath and under armour underneath my jersey.

A sorta funny story is my ex gf was running the mile at a track meet and there was no other girls competing so when they were about to start she yelled "I ALREADY ONE SATCHY!" She sounds like shes 5 so it was adorable! haha

Yup...
Wear compression shorts underneath so your junk doesn't hang out.
Pretty much all runners wear short shorts. It would be pointless to wear heavy basketball shorts when running.

Also, my team has a weird obsession with pooping in random public places on runs

I've run XC (cross country)for two years now and I'm finally on varsity :D!

During distance runs around town, the team all runs in SLIGHTLY above the knee shorts (except for the guys who are ashamed of their sexuality and insist that shorts above the knee are "gay") and a tee, compression shirt, or shirtless (which p-o's the coach because we're not supposed to do that )

As for meets, I love the feel of free-balling (no underwear at all and shirt shorts with a liner or built-in underwear) just feel so free lol! Or short compression shorts (about down to the VERY upper thigh, meeting slightly below the "goods". I also wear black briefs on occasion if I hadn't washed my compression shorts in awhile.

Funny running story:
There's a meet in NYC called Vancourtland. It's a HUGE meet and extremely crowded considering the size of the paths; it's literally shoulder to shoulder. The gun goes off and there's approximately 150 teen guys sprinting, filled with testosterone, shooting down this empty field with metal spikes on their feet (running shoes in XC meets have "spikes). As we make our way towards the spectator-less forest, the passage narrows and what was once shoulder to shoulder now becomes a battle of pushing and shoving to get ahead. I feel spikes dig into my ankle as we make our way across the first up-hill turn. We're all sweating and it's going everywhere. I can feel the runner behind me breathing down my neck and the person in front of me is perspiring so much so that it's starting to land on my face. I say, "excuse me" in attempt to get ahead, it's no use. I push forward, hitting the runner in front of me with a gold uniform out of the way and he screams, "You son of a #%@# @$#@ Luke!" kicking me in the knee with his spike. Blood and sweat begin to trickle down my leg and I swipe at him with my elbow, knocking him to the side and sprinting ahead. I flow down the hill like a river gone south and make my way to the finish line. As I walk towards the medal station, the person I pushed earlier comes up to me and says, "what the #%@# dude?". He was my friend and teammate :D.... woops:rolleyes:... XC is a serious sport

i run. You should get team shorts to run meets in. At practices you can run in whatever you want. I run in sliders so my junk doesnt move around a lot. Good Luck!

Used to do a fair bit of this to about county (districts of the UK/England) level. I just wore pretty standard Nike running shorts; no one wore stupidly short shorts. No funny running stories, just bad memories of having to run 10 kilometers over some of the steepest and most demanding hills in Cambridgeshire. I've favoured cycling since.
