Dharun Ravi, a former student at Rutgers University has been indicted and charged with a hate crime and 15 counts of bias and invasion of privacy, in the suicide of Tyler Clementi. Ravi has also been accused of trying to cover up a crime by deleting texts and tweets; he was indicted in Middlesex County. Ravi’s alleged partner Molly Wei has not been charged as of yet.

Shortly after the invasion of privacy, Tyler Clementi jumped off the George Washington Bridge.

Ravi is alleged to have targeted Clementi because of his sexual orientation and tried to broadcast the encounter online, via a webcam that was set up in Wei’s dorm room to view and stream Clementi’s encounter with another man. Ravi then tweeted "Roommate asked for the room till midnight. I went into molly's room and turned on my webcam. I saw him making out with a dude. Yay." Two days later, "Anyone with iChat, I dare you to video chat me between the hours of 9:30 and 12. Yes it's happening again."

Shortly after the invasion of privacy, Tyler Clementi jumped off the George Washington Bridge into the Hudson River. The suicide lead to a massive social media non-bullying campaign throughout the country. Attorney General Paula Dow said, “The states hate crime law recognizes the terrible harm caused by acts of bigotry and hatred and imposes harsher punishment on those who commit such crimes, Ravi is facing up to five to ten years in prison if he is convicted on the most serious bias charge.

Tyler Clementi's parents, Jane and Joe Clementi, said. "If these facts are true, as they appear to be, then it is important for our criminal justice system to establish clear accountability under the law." Tyler Clementi was 18 years old, and a promising violinist.

I think several thousand hours of community service are more appropriate, there's no need to derail someone's life over a prank that clearly had unintended consequences. Living with the guilt will be a pretty hefty punishment in and of itself.

To be fair the guy is not charged with causing his death; he is only charged with invading his privacy.

He's charged with a hate crime. There wasn't any hate here. (At least, none we know about anyway) If they were a straight couple, this wouldn't have made the news, or be facing criminal charges. Equality under the law means equality on all things.

Yes, but his tweets showed evidence that he did this because Clementi was gay. If Tyler had been fucking a women, Ravi wouldn't have made tweets saying "oh great. My roommate wants the room to fuck (insert chicks name)," nor would he have broadcasted it.

I don't know if 10 years is too much, but he should have some amount of prison time. People who steal things like jewelry and such can get jail time. Why should this not warrant some amount of time as well?

Plus, is there evidence that Ravi is remorseful of what happened?

One thing I wonder about this case is if Tyler Clementi were a woman would he Ravi have been charged with a sex crime and be forced to register as a sex offender if convicted.
