I recently stopped smoking and I am not sure. The gum chewing thing for me, does not work. I have a huge pack of gum. I used to smoke 2 to 3 packs a day so that might contribute to that. I also have Jolly Ranchers, those have been the most helpful because they last and they're good. Suckers or Tootsie or blow pops are good. If you're serious about quitting then get active. Because you will start to eat more. So make good substitutes when quitting. It takes a little over a week for you to get over the real grumpiness and agitation so try and stay out of the house until you need to be there because anything anyone does is very irritating and very stupid. The fixation of having the cigarette in your mouth is hard to get rid of too. You can do it though man, if I can stop, anyone can.

Yes smoking is definately the hardest thing to quit besides heroin. I think alot of people replace smoking with food because of the hand to mouth movement that their brain is so familiar with. Exercise is the best replacement. I know people in my family who quit usually drink alot of coffee

I have been using dip tobacco (kinda like chewing tobacco) and nicorette gum. I don't neccesarily suggest doing this, but sometimes you just have to do it! I did it a while ago and was clean for over a year, but I rebounded. Before even thinking about doing what I did, try quitting with no nicotine substitutes (I'm sure mixing nicorette with dip is ridiculously unhealthy, but if it is the only thing that will help, so be it.) If you chew nicorette and your parents don't know you smoke, I suggest carrying a pack of dentyne or something to cover up or if someone asks yiou for gum.

Just how heavy are we talking here?
I'm going to assume that if you've been able to maintain a regular and 'heavy' habit, you're old enough to legally purchase tobacco products. I imagine it would be hard to start a true habit if you have to have other people buy the stuff for you.
I would recommend nicotine replacement therapy (patches or gum) if you're serious about quitting or if you've tried before and failed. I have personally had better luck with the dermal patches as opposed to the gum, but the patches can be bloody expensive. But if you manage to quit smoking for the length of time you have the patches, then they pay for themselves.

If you have friends that use tobacco (they smoke, chew, etc.), ask them not to use it in front of you--maybe hang out with them less. Think of when you use it the most and when you want it the most, too. You more than likely have the tobacco built into your daily routine and you've been training yourself to indulge regularly (in the morning, after meals, every hour at work). So you have to realize when you're used to using the tobacco and consciously stop yourself during those times. The patches or gum will help reduce the cravings, but your own will to quit is equally important.
You will also need to figure out new ways of dealing with stressful situations, as you've likely become accustomed to smoking when you're stressed. I can offer no advice there.
Drinking or getting high will make you want the tobacco so much more and you're more likely to give in if you're not sober.

Ultimately, it's not at all convenient or easy to quit. You'll have to re-structure your life and fight something that's _everywhere_. But you have to come to the conclusion that you're tired of paying to do harm to yourself. It's up to you.

Kicking cigarettes is a very difficult habit to break! One I am currently battling with myself. There was a women I knew who kicked her habit in a very unusual way But it worked all the same. She stapled her ear lobe and every time she felt the need to smoke she would have her husband or a friend wiggle it! The sheer pain would almost bring her to tears but after the pain would subside she wouldn't need a smoke. In the end she kicked her addiction and never looked back. Now obviously thats a little crazy but its an out of the box way to achieve your goal lol.

I use to smoke but I quit because my uncle is slowly dying because he has emphysema. But I picked up dipping which I figure is not as bad because it calms me down. But the way I quit was, I just chewed gum but I have nervous ticks I started chewing and dipping. Sorry if that doesn't help.
