Before I start I just want to say;
In no way whatsoever am I promoting self harm. It's a horrible thing to have to go through, I know so myself. And Idk if this is in the right forum but Shh ;o.

Don't you find it a bit strange that animals self harm? There was a new horse today at the stables, it was really quite distressed. I saw it hitting it's head against the wall, and being a horsewoman myself that's not usual behavior and the horse doesn't have a past of doing that; isn't it a bit weird it's almost natural for animals to do it?

But then would they have do it if it wasn't for humans? We're the ones that keep them locked up I guess, so does that make it un-natural?

Bit weird and interesting at the same time, right?! :s.

I don't think the horse was self harming, I believe it was trying to escape from the stall. haha :P

If it was new to the stables, it probably wasn't very comfortable. It should prob warm up soon, eh?

N'aww it was self harming, the vet said so ;o. Yeh it's slowly getting more comfortable, after some sedation..;s.

Then maybe the vet needs checking over.

Animals don't self harm. A horse hitting its head against the wall is most likely distressed because it has been moved, has an itch in an awkward place, or is attention seeking (which animals seem to do, I've known horses to do so).

Animals do self harm.

Not every case of this is such, but they do. I remember this (http://newfoundlandnews.blogspot.com/2008/03/self-harm-seen-in-animals-too.html) source being posted on VT at some point, about this. As well, if you google it, there are a couple more pages about it as well.

I see what you mean, when I get frustrated or annoyed I hit my head against things sometimes. It makes sense for animals to do it, but we'll never fully know till we can talk to them.
