I want to get an iphone contract, how does getting it sorted out work? Will I be able to lave the shop the same day with the phone? Thanks.

Yeah you will, basically you'll go into the shop and choose your phone, they'll ask you to select a plan which is basically a package of what you'll receive. Mine for example is on orange. I get the 35 Dolphin plan which consists of 900 minutes, unlimited texts and 500mb internet usage. The cost of the plan is what you'll be paying per month. Again for example mine is £35 per month which is basically what i was using in credit per month before i went onto contract. and then you'll select how long you want to be on the plan for; 12 months, 18 or 24 months. You'll sign up all your details, you'll need to have a card/bank account for the money to be taken out of per month and once all thats gone through you'll be able to leave with your phone. It'll take a few days for the contract plan to kick in though from what i remember.

That sounds sweet. If the contract isn't activated, does that mean I can't use the phone for messages and stuff?

I'm not entirely sure, from what i remember I used mine from the day i got it but it took a few days for all of it to be ironed out

Long as I can take the phone back to Ireland with me, doesn't matter if it takes a few days. Sounds good.
