I always find myself in awkward situations where there's another person beside me or just there and he or she is doing nothing. I want to talk to them but I don't what to say. Any advice?

To solve any awkward silence, you shout "The only thing I will put in that hole is tuna!" But seriously, say "You`re quite the talkative one. What`s on your mind?" or something of the like. Don`t make them feel like a stranger, or it will make things more awkward.

Whenever I'm in silences that last any more than a minute with someone, I ask them, "What are you thinking about right now?" And usually, that will spark a new conversation.

"What's up?" Sorry, not much of a help but that usually gets things started.

Like in the TV show Friends: "Where'd you grow up?" :P
Good things are recent events and the traditional "What's up?". But it kinda depends on the person you're talking to.

Well me, I just talk about random things that make no sense at all. Most of the times were not even talking about something, just being silly. But if you wanna start a conversation I suggest asking what Autumn said and saying, "What's on your mind?" or something along those lines.
